Tomorrow: 1st episode of my @BBCRadio4 @bbcworldservice series, 100 Years of Exile. bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00107w… - the story of 100 years of refugee crises. Thanks above all to @gilesedwards for turning a century into 90 minutes of radio!

It’s HUMAN rights not FAMILY rights. I have to manage digestion of the new UK immigration proposals to one shock per hour - this one is especially absurd & cruel. It’s also very relevant to my current work around the problematic construction of family in social & migration policy

Holy cow. A person is excluded from British citizenship if they have ever met the unlawful entry provisions ever but also so are their British born children if EITHER parent ever entered illegally - again I’d say the application to children is pretty clear unlawful discrimination

This is what a culture war looks like. Where are those freedom of speech advocates when you need them?

Just crossed Darién Gap w/500 migrants from across world. Saw best & worst of humanity but mostly humanity. 23yo diabetic died—no insulin. Wife, toddler & rest had to bury him in mud & go on. Dehumanizing policies distract from failure to meet challenge of our time: Refugee planet

Think of how extremist the Republican Parry has to be to defend Trump despite the fact that he literally wanted to lead a violent coup. Just totally new territory in American history since Civil War.

You can directly ring the airline responsible for the Rwanda deportation flight (Privilege style) and tell them what you think. As of a minute ago they're still picking up the phone. 34971408985

Hey Iberojet - is it only some refugees that matter? @iberojetair_es, @privilege757 and @TitanAirways: it’s time to rule out being part of the UK government’s dodgy cash for refugees deal. #RefugeesWelcome #Rwanda #PrivilegeStyle #TitanAirways #Iberojet

Syrians. It's 15 Syrians who have been served with a removal notice that they'll be sent away to Rwanda on 14 June. We cannot stand for this barbarism. Syrians refugees, ALL refugees are welcome here.

Johnson probably believes that if he can get one poor asylum seeker who is seeking protection from atrocities at our shores onto a plane to Rwanda, he can survive a confidence vote. It's the most despicable explanation I can think of and so it's probably the right one.

The power of tabloid journalism to drive fear of immigration… this is a great thread about how perception is driven by storytelling, not numbers.
NEW: for this week’s column I dug into the curious case of British attitudes to immigration Before the EU ref, concern about immigration tracked levels of arrivals. Since then, immigration has kept rising but concerns have evaporated What’s going on? ft.com/content/f2d72f42-af5f…

Eritreans I spoke to in Ug said they were pushed/had fled across the border with Israel's payoff money ($2500) then had to decide whether to spend this on travel to somewhere else (often Libya), or hope it didn't run out before they found work in Uganda's straining economy.

The UK government isn't the first to send its refugees to Rwanda. Israel tried it 5 years ago - in this @BBCRadio4 documentary @mobilitymuse spoke to Israeli MP @Michal_Rozin to find out what happened. Worth a listen: it's just 2 mins from 18'30 bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0010p…

Read all about the outcome of Israeli offshoring efforts to Rwanda here. This is just more desperate cruelty from Patel that will only be celebrated by international gangs of smugglers & traffickers. It will not make refugees disappear. #r4today law.ox.ac.uk/research-subjec…

Utterly wrong. When Israeli sent its asylum seekers to Rwanda, just a few years ago, they were pushed across border to Uganda and left destitute. There’s no reason to trust a different outcome this time: there’s no universe in which this can be defended. theguardian.com/uk-news/2022…
