Islamic shahada, proclamation of faith, if one recites in front of two witnesses, becomes a Muslim. It says (I bear witness that) “There is no diety* greater than Allah. Muhammed is his messenger.” It was not always this and had evolved constantly. Inclusion of Mohammed into the core proclamation of faith it seems was a later addition. Here is the inscription of the shahada on the Jaffa gate ordered by Salahuddin after his siege of Jerusalem in 1187. It reads “There is no diety greater than Allah. Abraham is a friend of Allah (khalilullah)”. When did Muhammed replace Abraham? And was it a linear evolution with the following prophets included?
