Watching the FIFA World Cup has reminded me why I chose rugby.
In football, you often see players pointing fingers when a goal is conceded ,blaming the goalkeeper, the defender, or someone else for a mistake. You see players going down easily in search of a foul or a penalty, and teams sometimes set up with no intention of attacking, content to defend deep and play for a draw.
Take today’s Spain vs Cape Verde match as an example. Cape Verde defended heroically and earned a memorable point, but their game plan was clear: stay organised, absorb pressure, and frustrate Spain. In rugby, that approach simply isn’t sustainable. You can’t spend an entire match defending; eventually, you have to carry the ball, win territory, and create opportunities.
That’s what makes rugby so special. It demands accountability, resilience, and collective effort. There’s no hiding behind teammates, no time to dwell on mistakes, and no substitute for moving forward together.
Different sports have different beauties, but moments like these remind me why I’m proud to have chosen rugby.
Long live RUGBY ❤️
