Born #OnThisDay in 1646 was John Flamsteed FRS, the first Astronomer Royal. His achievements included the first comprehensive telescopic star catalogue, the establishment of the Royal Observatory and the first observations of Uranus (though he thought it was a star). #Astronomy

Given that I am among the 5-7% of pilots that are female, #AmeliaEarhartDay is such an important day for me as we celebrate the first female pilot to complete a solo flight across the Atlantic. She is proof that when girls dream big, we can achieve anything we set our minds to!

#Artist and #illustrator, Elizabeth Gould was born #OTD in 1804.
She illustrated the bird volume of "The zoology of the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle" which includes this Short-eared owl. The specimen was presented to ZSL's Museum, John Gould identified it as a new species

Nora Sidgwick, an outstanding mathematician and sister-in-law to Lord Rayleigh,worked with him on electrical standards and influenced his decision to admit women to experimental physics courses in 1882.Co-founding Newnham College, she championed women's right to university exams.
