Friends, I’ve been on Twitter for 14 years and generally I have enjoyed it. The situation with the new owner and the new random rules has drained all of the goodness away for me. I’m stepping away from Twitter for while. Perhaps I’ll be back at some point.

I’m no aviation expert, but one technique for avoiding being tracked by ADS-B is to fly on commercial airlines. Sounds crazy I know, but it might work.

Lots of people in software talk about “technical debt”, but I don’t think we have a shared definition of this term. Also I think the metaphor is bad. Rarely do we explicitly “borrow” some bad, faster to write code.

Hard conversations I had today: 1) my teenage son: dad, why do people hate Jews? 2) some friends: we want to do a web3 startup. Will you help us?

The real answer, I think, is that the terms are often interchangeable. The real distinction for me is more like, do you index the data so you can quickly read a small bit, or do you make it reasonable to read all of it.

Today @heathercmiller let me talk to her dist-sys class at CMU, and it was super fun. Trying to be thought provoking, I asked them what the difference was between a database and a filesystem.

In these troubled times, I am reminded that little babies in fun costumes are just wonderful. Also, dogs in costumes. These are good things.

Doing some remodeling. Teen son lost his Ethernet temporarily. I gave him the crimping kit and told him to figure it out or just use wifi. To my delight, he figured it out. Crimping cables is hard.

I interview a lot of candidates at my current job, and mostly what I ask are “systems design” questions. I’m seeing a trend of people suggesting to use a message queue like Kafka or Kinesis without understanding why or what the tradeoffs are. Anybody know why?
