I must confess to being a bit emotional this morning at the news of a knighthood for Kevin Sinfield. I’ve always called him ‘Sir Kev’ and it’s hard to think of a man more deserving. He showed us all what it is to be a friend. What it means to step up when people need you and he did it all for his mate ❤️ After he carried Rob across the line in the Leeds marathon someone sent me this poem anonymously and I kept it on my phone. They called it ‘Arise Sir Kev’… When shadows gathered, and hearts would break Kev knew it was time to take… One step, another, through wind and rain, Carrying hope, despite the pain. He never stopped, mile after mile, Driven by loyalty, strength… a smile. For Rob, his friend, he aim was true Showing us all, what friendship can do. Not measured in trophies, applause, or fame… But turning up, again and again. And in every mile he chose to run, He showed us how friendship is truly done.

As ITV unveil there super-snazzy Brooklyn studio for the World Cup I do feel a bit for the BBC who will broadcasting games back in Salford. The location will have cost ITV a fortune and the BBC can’t win… if they go then there is criticism every day about the cost and, if they don’t go, they get hammered for staying at home. Must feel very distant at the moment though.

It’s an age old argument but… why send your political correspondent on a foreign trip with the PM? Why cover the Olympic 100m final in the stadium? Why actually travel to a war zone to report on it? Of course it can be done at distance but there is no substitute for actually being there and seeing things first hand. In a world of AI and fakery authenticity is still important.
ok but why is doing it at brooklyn bridge apparently better than a fully kitted out tv studio?

Does anyone know how much these ‘sit-at-a-table-by-the-corner-flag’ seats are? Also… are they available for the World Cup?

On this day in 2018… I had the privilege of covering 5 World Cups with the BBC working with some amazing people. Looking forward to this one getting underway. Let’s hope - aside from all the politics - for a month of magical memories.

Football remains the beautiful game but the men who run it are managing to severely damage its reputation and it looks like they will be pressing the accelerator throughout this World Cup. It is incredibly sad.

“That’s not evidence”
WOW -- Trump crashes out and cuts his interview with Welker short as she presses him on his lack of evidence for claiming elections are rigged "You're either crooked or you're stupid. Let's call it quits. Because I've had enough. Thank you darling," he tells her." "I traveled all the way to Wisconsin for this interview," she pleads.

Good morning from Classic FM HQ I interviewed Richard E Grant & Claire Foy yesterday for their funky new film Savage House - which is out today. As we finished the interview Richard said he listens to breakfast every day (which was really cool) and Claire has it on all the time for her dog! So there you go… get involved like the residents of Savage House ❤️

What an amazing time in New York with the family. It is both bonkers & brilliant. I have been before with work but our kids have been desperate to go so we spent a week doing all the things - and going to all the places - they have dreamed about. We booked it to come at the end of the tribunal (which thankfully never happened) and we made enough memories to last a lifetime. New Yorkers are still just as brash as I remember. On our first day a lady shouted “I’m getting off” and pushed her way through a packed lift. No sign of an “excuse me” or a “do you mind if I come through?” 😂 Highlights: The American Museum of Natural History & The Museum of Modern Art are both incredible and have the ability to take your breath away. If you’re going to go high, Top Of The Rock gives you amazing 360 views of NY. Katz’s Deli is just as mad as the instagram videos suggest. It’s always packed but the sandwiches are top tier - we loved the brisket. There are brilliant views and vistas at every turn… Central Park is just beautiful, we took the subway to Dumbo and walked back accross the Brooklyn Bridge, we spent hours at the 9/11 Memorial - which was really moving - and the family loved The Statue Of Liberty too (make sure you book official tickets). Kenrex is just as good in New York as it was in London - we missed Whoopi Goldberg & Bradley Cooper by a night and our eldest called Hades Town “fantabulous” and Joshua Colley was “everything” 🎭 Grand Central Station was ENORMOUS, I’ve wanted to watch a Yankees game my whole life and we saw Aaron Judge hit a home run in ‘bottom of the 9th’ to seal a win! The Friends Experience is wildly overpriced but a solid 7/10 if you love the series and The High Line is one of the best things in New York. If I was only there for a day I’d spend half of it there. Everything is crazy expensive and add 20% to it all. As the lovely fella at the 9/11 Memorial explained to the mum in front of us who asked if the audio guide was free… “Honey… you’re in New York… nothing is free”. Feel free to add your recommendations. Have a wonderful Sunday.

The legendary Gary Mabbutt is continuing to check in on our elderly fans with regular phone calls on their birthdays. Today he’s made his 20,000 call in the last six years. Incredible work, Mabbsy 🤍

This weekend sees the last ever episode of Football Focus broadcast on the BBC. One of my colleagues sent me this earlier this week. A montage of some of the stuff we did on the show and it brought back so many lovely memories ❤️ I can tell you exact spot where I was standing on the old runway at Turnberry golf club when I got the call to see if I wanted to become the presenter of Football Focus. I was covering The Open in 2009 and it was one of the best conversations I have ever had. For a kid who had grown up watching the show every week with my dad it was an amazing privilege to know that I would be hosting a programme which had always been such a big part of my weekend. I called my dad immediately and he was just as pleased as I was. When the news was announced I had a phone call from the one and only Bob Wilson. He was so warm and encouraging, as he always is, and said “Dan, you are gonna love this job. There is nothing like it… make sure you take care of it”. I hope I did. As a former custodian of the couch, Bob knew how special it was and I felt the same way when I handed over the reins to the brilliant Alex Scott when I left Focus after 12 seasons. People still talk to me about the show all the time. Focus is stitched into my life and I know there are still so many fans who really care about it which is why it’s such a crazy decision to get rid of it. Move it to Saturday morning, tinker with the format but, in a world where there is such a premium on reliable and trusted brands, why would you throw away over 50 years of hard work and history? It carries weight. I remember interviewing Pele years ago and I told him I was from Football Focus and he said “I know all about Football Focus” with a big smile. When we were filming a show about the history of Barcelona at the Nou Camp we were about to sit down to talk to Eusebio and Johan Cryuff (I had to pinch myself about that one) and Sir Bobby Charlton walked over and said to them, “You can tell this is important gentlemen… the team from Football Focus are here”. When I called Noel Gallagher to talk about an idea we had to get him to interview Mario Ballotelli at Manchester City he rearranged his world tour to be there. Obviously Balotelli was a draw but Noel said “I’d do anything for Football Focus”. When I interviewed Jurgen Klopp in the tearoom at Exeter City before an FA cup tie the lovely ladies serving brews were wedged into the corner while we spoke. I introduced them to Mr Klopp afterwards and he apologised for stealing their space; “Don’t worry about that” they said. “We’ve just been on Football Focus! Wait until we tell the family about this!”. I know the game has changed and the way we consume it has changed but there is still an audience there if you find the right place for it, promote it, ‘take care of it’ and give fans the chance to be part of the conversation on an informed, thoughtful and entertaining show about the sport we all love. I am gutted it’s going but also so thankful for all the amazing people I got to work with over the years. They remain life-long friends and I still can’t quite believe I got to sit alongside the people I grew up watching play the game at the highest level. I remember when Alan Shearer called me “Dan” on one of the first shows I worked on. The little kid inside me thought “Alan Shearer knows my name!”. It was a pleasure to work with so many brilliant pundits and it was great to watch Alex develop on Focus and then go on to host the programme so well. I was asked this week to pick a favourite moment from my 12 years on the show. It’s a very hard question because I have a huge catalogue of wonderful memories. I always look back on our on-the-road shows because we were taking Focus out to the fans; their club was the canvas and we got to paint a beautiful picture together each week about what the place meant to the community, the history, the culture and all the things that were part of that.

I will never forget Gary Speed’s last show. That is a programme I still think about all the time. I know his death had a profound effect on so many people and it remains a tragic and important milestone in how we talk about mental health. That’s one of the things Focus was always able to do. We never shied away from the serious stuff and I think the viewers knew and appreciated that. I loved our outside broadcast from Camp Bastion in Afghanistan too. We dreamed big and pulled it off and even the Prime Minister at the time (David Cameron) flew in to be part of the show! I remember speaking to loads of Afghan soldiers out there who hardly spoke any English but knew all the players in the Premier League. It was a reminder of the power of football to unite us all - even in warzone. I travelled out there with Kevin Kilbane and Big John Hartson and that will remain one of the best programs we ever worked on. So, as I think about the last ever Football Focus this weekend, I am sad that it’s over but incredibly thankful to be part of a programme that still means so much to so many.
