I've written a book! Next Level: Making Games That Make Themselves is the story of procedural generation - the tech behind games like Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress. It's about how it works, the games that use it, and the art behind it. Out May 7th: linktr.ee/next_level

Happy publication day @mtrc! Discover how generative systems are reshaping the way games are made, how we experience them, and what this reveals about creativity itself. Next Level is out NOW!

Next Level is out in just 3 days - some people already have their preorders, which is scary and cool! I'm doing a few threads this week about some of the stuff I cover in the book, today let me tell you about two very special games. (Pre/order it here: linktr.ee/next_level)

I love both of these games so much, but their creators are also so important, in terms of their contributions to the communities and how they acted as inspirations for so many more people to do research and design around procedural generation. That's what the book is about, too.

You can still order Next Level! It's in local bookshops, and online in lots of places too. You can also get it on Amazon if you can suffer huge corporations and want to boost us on an arbitrary chart: amazon.co.uk/Next-Level-Maki… Thanks to everyone for their support! 💜🙏

This is a celebration of a field that stretches back decades, before videogames even. It's my tribute to the best people I know and the beautiful things they've made. If you want to know why procgen matters today - and why it isn't generative AI - this is the book for you.

I'm eager to talk more about the book - please invite me to your universities, events, podcasts, family dinners so I can talk about the book, about the magic of procedural generation, or about the cursed nature of 'generative' tech!

Over the last year, your colleagues, comrades and friends at KCL have been harassed for defending Palestinian rights, upholding academic freedom and union activism. THIS is why we are balloting members NOW. But what exactly has been happening?

#AI video generation tools can now generate full videos from text with dialogue, sound effects, and surreal realism. But it comes with risks and energy costs. Dr Mike Cook (@mtrc) from @kclinformatics explains the new tech. @KingsNMES
