Is a VPN ban coming? @mullvadnet was right
'We will make further statements in July about VPNs and further restrictions' Technology Secretary Liz Kendall told #BBCBreakfast she will outline more details next month about the social media ban on under 16s in the UK - as well as additional restrictions on Virtual Private Networks, curfews and chatbots bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2ky…

Mind blowing

Staying in many hotels are Europe is like a punishment beating I remember staying in Copenhagen last year and it was 30c but air con was pathetic (environmental regs)
I'm back in America My hotel room has: - AC that goes down to 18°C/64°F but my sensor shows it's 16°C/61°F! Ice cold means perfect sleep - $100 in free spending on anything full minibar with beautiful products like Norwegian canned salmon with Sichuan peppers (!) - free water and sparkling water bottles every day, fresh fruit bowl - daily room cleaning without asking, finished before noon! - bathroom full of amenities extra amenities you could request during booking like Marvis toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash ear plugs, sleeping mask - moderately fast wifi (to be honest) The top European hotel in Netherlands we were in last few weeks for same price: - AC did not go below 23°C/73°F, and to make it worse windows were locked (for eco reasons) - empty minibar (for eco) - no water bottles (the paper said use tap water like the locals for eco, guess what NL tap water is full of PFAS the gov just admitted) - no daily cleaning, we had to ask for it every day, and when we came back 4pm it still wasn't cleaned, every day (for eco) - strictly no amenities (for eco) - unusably slow wifi America is much more value now for your $ or € than most of Europe (And ofc Asia too)

Public consultation survey had no clickable 'No' option to disagree with the social media ban, Labour then used this to claim public support.

As the formula used to set social rents is still anchored to 1999 prices, they've fallen a lot in relative value since. Social rents are now just 41% of market rents across England, falling to just 33% in London. Hugely distortionary and means massive subsidies for a select few.
Replying to @maxtempers
The maximum subsidy is meant to be 50%. So is this because the councils - through incompetence or otherwise - are using totally outdated rents as the benchmark? It’s a scandal and bloody infuriating

If this is right re. Youtube, it is a mind-boggling act of educational self-harm. We are failing our kids if we allow legitimate concerns about social media to seep into how we think about tech more generally.
🚨NEW: Teachers are raising concerns about a ban on YouTube for under-16s as many year 10 and 11 students use the platform to learn and revise GCSE content

Every argument made for banning social media for under 16s could also be made for banning social media for adults

Banning YouTube for under 16s makes no sense at all An increasing numbers of under 50s watch YouTube instead of “normal TV” As an older millennial I only watch TV for the World Cup, otherwise I only watch YouTube, so I can’t imagine the habits of those under 20 these days I can only imagine policy is being made by those much older with little understanding of the normal habits of younger folk — there will be a big backlash

My son basically had a crash out at school when his form tutor told him they were going to ban YouTube for him. He is never going to vote Labour now

Meta will spend more on chips this year than Germany spends on defense, but it is failing to catch the frontier. @pietergaricano and @Simon__Grimm argue that for Europe to try to develop a "sovereign AI model" won't fix our AI problem and that a "Buy European" act means paying billions for worse models with more security holes that will slow down growth. siliconcontinent.com/p/ninet…

It’s bizarre that there is social housing where the rent is 80% of the market rate, and in central London, yet no one ever risks discussing it due to the backlash that always follows — and at the same time high earning young people live in house shares with many other people even if they have very good high earning jobs
The council house swapping Facebook groups and websites are very eye-opening. There are 6- and 7-bedroom properties on offer in Zone 2 at ~£750 a month. Private rents for similar properties would be £6,000 . Enormous subsidies are being distributed in the worst possible way.

Allowing 16 year olds to vote in elections but banning them from social media at night time is totally incoherent

Stamp duty is why I won’t move flats.
The stupidity of, and damage done by, stamp duty is being recognised by more and more people. I’ve said it before and l’ll say it again: any govt which cared about economic growth and people’s welfare would abolish it. thetimes.com/article/026bd67…

The most popular magazine of the Labour Party doesn't think AI is important... Your job is to get people to understand why this stuff is important
Hard for people who work in or around this stuff to conceive of, but most people in Britain do not give a fuck about AI, you may as well ask why aren’t the BBC writing about the latest update to Microsoft Excel
