NC State qualified for national soil judging last week. I didn’t get to bed until 3 am last Friday, hence the late tweet. We had the #1, 3, and 4 judgers. Congrats to the team!

Soil judging is in KY this October. Talked about fragipans (and by extension, loess) for about an hour. Was reminded of this gem students @murphyc1928 ? made after our first contest at WKY.

As of today, I am officially an Associate Professor with tenure. That is all.

The TT to Stirling castle ends on a big rock plateau with characteristic vertical ‘columns’. This plateau is magmatic, and made from basalt. The columns form parallel to the cooling direction, and are typical for basalt. But the Stirling plateau is not a lava: the magma never reached the surface through a volcano. Instead, the magma intruded between layers of sediment, pumping it up like an air bed. This known as a ‘sill’.
