NC State qualified for national soil judging last week. I didn’t get to bed until 3 am last Friday, hence the late tweet. We had the #1, 3, and 4 judgers. Congrats to the team!

Soil judging is in KY this October. Talked about fragipans (and by extension, loess) for about an hour. Was reminded of this gem students @murphyc1928 ? made after our first contest at WKY.

She thought she could. So she did. Sarah Bailey, just two months into her freshman year, won 1st in the Eastern regional soil judging contest. πŸ… Read what spurred her interest in soil science and how @MuckDragon's entire team is setting records. πŸŽ‰πŸΊ cals.ncsu.edu/crop-and-soil-…

The TT to Stirling castle ends on a big rock plateau with characteristic vertical β€˜columns’. This plateau is magmatic, and made from basalt. The columns form parallel to the cooling direction, and are typical for basalt. But the Stirling plateau is not a lava: the magma never reached the surface through a volcano. Instead, the magma intruded between layers of sediment, pumping it up like an air bed. This known as a β€˜sill’. Erosion, for instance during the ice ages by glaciers, brought it eventually to the surface, as a nice defendable place to build a castle and to finish a bike race! geo-sports.org/2023/geology-… #UCIWorldChampionships #GlasgowScotland2023
