Last weekend, I had the privilege of presenting at the 2026 ND Africa Conference at the Hesburgh Center for International Studies, @NotreDame - a room full of brilliant African minds gathered around the theme: Belonging and Becoming.
Founders are doing the work. Talking to customers. Taking notes. Running interviews.
And still building the wrong thing.
Here is what keeps showing up:
â—Ź One founder launched a product that worked, to silence. He later said he confused people showing up with people
discovery sooner."
These are not edge cases. This is the norm. The problem is not effort. It is two gaps that most founders never see coming.
â—Ź Gap 1: No validation process. Passion is not a method.
â—Ź Gap 2: False positives. Customers are polite. Politeness is not a purchase

organization and a vulnerable one.
So, why is this soft skill so critical? Here’s what I’ve found:
✅ For individuals – Engaging stakeholders increases access to resources, mentorship, and better career opportunities.
✅ For teams and organizations – It helps prevent
unforeseen challenges that could derail goals.
✅ For long-term success – Strong stakeholder relationships drive growth, innovation, and sustainability.
But here’s the catch: delayed or poor stakeholder engagement can be just as damaging as not engaging at all.
