President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni launched Uganda’s first locally developed anti-tick vaccine at the National Livestock Resources Research Institute (NaLIRRI) in Namulonge, Nansana Municipality, commissioning the innovation as a major milestone in the country’s livestock research and disease control efforts. Excelsa coffee naturally grows in the wild within Zoka Central Forest Reserve and Semuliki National Park. However, some farmers, especially in Central Uganda, have been cultivating the crop with limited scientific guidance. The ongoing research seeks to provide improved varieties and evidence-based recommendations to support farmers and expand Uganda’s coffee diversity and resilience.

Today at National Livestock Resources Research Institute in Namulonge, I commissioned Uganda’s first locally developed anti-tick vaccine, NAROVAC-ATV1. This is a lasting solution to tick-borne diseases that have affected our cattle keepers for a long time. The cow now kills the tick. This innovation reduces reliance on toxic acaricides and lowers the cost of livestock production. It is part of Uganda’s movement into science-led transformation. I congratulate our scientists and reaffirm government support to strengthen research for national development.

Q&A session between H.E. @KagutaMuseveni and the vaccine scientist H.E: The scientist come back and explain to the Ugandan how the vaccine protects the livestock? Does the cow now kill the tick? The scientist (Dr. Swidiq Mugerwa): Your excellency, we got the protein from the tick its self. When you put the protein inform of a vaccine and inject it in the blood of the cow, the cow recognises it as a foreign body and produces soldiers/anti-bodies to fight against that protein. When the tick sucks blood that contains the soldiers/antibodies they kill the tick

Scientist: Your excellency the farmers will get it at Ug shillings 10,000/= H.E: Is there a possibility that the ticks will get immune again? Scientist: The ticks cannot develop immunity against it.
