Los Angeles has a long history with disaster. Last summer, I took a roadtrip with @nathanmasters and @KCET to film an episode of “Lost LA” about the 1928 St. Francis Dam collapse, a catastrophe that destroyed communities all the way to the sea. Episode premieres tonight on PBS.

Very much enjoyed @nathanmasters book CROOKED, where I discovered a fascinating character named M. Blair Coan. In this week's Substack newsletter:

Wheeler's investigation ultimately forced Harry Daugherty's resignation and shocked the nation into caring whether the Department of Justice was true to its name. The former AG was tried twice for conspiracy to defraud the US, but both trials resulted in hung juries.

Oh, an in an ironic twist, Wheeler's crusade against the abuse of the Bureau of Investigation's powers resulted in the rise of a young J. Edgar Hoover. He would serve as director of the Bureau (later rechristened "FBI") for nearly 48 years.

Meanwhile, banker Mal Daugherty defied a Senate subpoena for his brother's banking records. The Senate had its sergeant-at-arms arrest Mal, who challenged his detention in federal court. Ultimately, SCOTUS ruled for the Senate, confirming Congress' power to compel testimony.

The story soon took a dramatic turn, for Harry Daugherty had no problem "weaponizing" the DOJ against his political enemies. Just as Sen. Wheeler closed in on the truth, he found himself indicted on trumped-up federal charges.

The charming Roxie Stinson, ex-wife of Daugherty's constant companion, Jess Smith, was Wheeler's first star witness. With wit and impressive recall, she told Wheeler's select committee how the two men had traded government favors (pardons, liquor permits, etc.) for personal gain.

In his molasses drawl, former Bureau of Investigation special agent (and legendary con artist) Gaston Bullock Means recalled how he'd spied on members of Congress on behalf of the attorney general.
