Do you think student migration is random in Higher Education in India? The data says otherwise One chart from The Enrollment Index 2026 gives you a flavour of student mobility for higher education across states When you look at enrollment at the national level, state-to-state movement looks like noise. Tiny percentages. Nothing to act on. Zoom into the state resolution, and a completely different picture emerges - student mobility in India isn't random at all. It runs on defined "highways." A few things that jumped out: → Fortress states. Punjab retains 94.6% of its students. Tamil Nadu, 92.5%. They barely lose anyone. → Exporter states. Bihar and Haryana lose more than half their students to other states. → Power magnets. Punjab is pulling 28% of students leaving both Bihar and Haryana. UP absorbs 43.6% of everyone exiting Bihar. → Tamil Nadu in total isolation - Almost near-zero (in % terms ) interaction with northern and eastern states. A market unto itself. For anyone building enrollment strategy, this changes the question entirely. It's not "where are students?" - it's "which corridor are they already moving along, and are you positioned on it? This is just one screen. We've drilled down into every aspect to bring you the Unified Enrollment Index - built on 4.3M student enquiries, AI in Enrollment, and much more. We just launched the Enrollment Index 2026 India's only unified benchmark for student enrollment - built this year on 4.3 crore student inquiries, nearly double last year's edition. The big shift: AI is now a discovery channel for higher education. For the first time, we measured enrollments coming from AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini etc. a channel we call GEO. It's still small in volume, but it converts at 6.11%, roughly 6x the digital average. Students who find institutions through AI arrive with far stronger intent. Three things the data made clear: → Students no longer want to browse a website —> they want to have a conversation on it → Re-engagement beats acquisition — re-inquired students are 14% of leads but drive 40% of enrollments → The biggest lead generators are rarely the best converters The enrollment gap is no longer about who spends more. It's about who engages intent more intelligently after discovery. Enrollment Index isn't an opinion - it's hard data, drawn from 4.3 crore student inquiries. They simply show the industry as it actually is. And the institutions that engage with the data - are the ones that will shape where enrollment goes next. When Meritto created India's first unified enrollment benchmark last year, the goal was to give the sector a true north. As the category creator in enrollment technology and education vertical SaaS, this edition sharpens it - and points to where institutional advantage will be built next: AI-generated discovery. Honoured to join yesterday’s roundtable hosted by @EPSIIndia where leaders from academia, research institutions, and policy bodies came together to discuss the future of India’s research ecosystem and the growing importance of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) framework in the age of AI. I had the opportunity to present what the DPDP Act means for institutions, and how they should start preparing for the shift ahead. Today, institutions are custodians of massive amounts of student, parent, faculty, research, and behavioural data. With AI becoming deeply integrated into the education journey, data governance can no longer remain only an IT or compliance discussion. It is now becoming a leadership, trust, and institutional readiness agenda. Every process, every workflow, and every structure will need to be re-looked at and prepared accordingly. Institutions that proactively prepare for DPDP will not just stay compliant — they will build stronger trust, stronger digital foundations, and better long-term student experiences. India’s education ecosystem is entering a defining decade where AI, digital infrastructure, and data responsibility will evolve together. Awareness and preparation today will define institutional resilience tomorrow.

EPSI has been the backbone in keeping the interests of the education sector at the forefront, ensuring that both institutions and students benefit. They consistently lead initiatives to prepare institutions for what is coming next. In that context, I had the opportunity to guide institutions on the DPDP Act-what it truely means for institutions, how they should prepare, and what kind of internal and external questions they should be asking, including the why and how.
