Patsy Mink became the first woman of color and the first Asian American woman elected to Congress in 1964. She made tireless efforts in support of women’s rights, civil rights, education, and more.
Today we wear teal to #SupportSurvivors! But support is more than just wearing a color. It is working in our communities to dismantle oppressive systems that are the root causes of sexual violence. It is practicing survivor-defined justice. #SAAM2024#TealTuesday

From the 1940s and 1950s, alongside the civil rights movement, Black women and women of color led the charge against sexual violence, opening vital discussions on assault and domestic abuse.
By 1971, the first rape crisis center opened in San Francisco, marking a pivotal moment in the fight for survivor support, followed by the groundbreaking Take Back the Night event in 1978.
Years of relentless advocacy brought significant milestones, including the Violence Against Women Act of 1993.
Advocates held events, marches, and observances for years prior to the first nationally observed SAAM in 2001.“
💭 How do we create a world where survivors feel safe sharing their stories? A world where they will be heard, believed & supported?
❤️April is Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month. Sending love to all the survivors out there. #SAAM2024

(1/3) On #WomensEqualityDay, we celebrate the ways women have come a long way towards equality and acknowledge there’s still a long way to go. In the United States, women are still paid $0.77 for every $1.00 paid to white men, $11,782 yearly.
ALT “Then we're fighting for other rights [like] paid maternity leave. Often, people don't understand that we [Black women] are the caretakers of our families. So when someone gets sick, more than likely, it's going to be the woman that is going to [take care of them]. Nine times out of ten [we're] going to take time off from work, taking care of a loved one,” says Candice, an esthetician from Charlotte, North Carolina.
ALT In the United States, women are paid $0.77 to every $1.00 paid to white men. This equals to $11, 782 yearly.
ALT In North Carolina, women on average are paid much less annually than white, non-Hispanic men doing the same jobs. White, non-Hispanic women earn $13, 127; Asian American women earn $13, 670; Black women earn $18, 818; Native American women earn $20, 287; and Latina women earn $25, 062 in comparison.
ALT This means the gender gap will not close until 2045 for Asian American women; 2144 for Black women; and 2210 for Latina women.
