On this day in 2021, El Salvador, led by
@nayibbukele, approved its Bitcoin Law, becoming the first country to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender.
For Bitcoin, it was a historic moment.
What began as a peer-to-peer digital currency was now being tested at a national level, with governments, regulators, businesses, and citizens watching closely. The years that followed showed how complex national adoption can be. Laws changed, usage evolved, and the Chivo Wallet did not gain the level of local adoption many expected.
Still, the impact was undeniable.
El Salvador helped push Bitcoin into the global policy conversation and showed that adoption is not just about buying an asset.
It’s also about infrastructure, education, regulation, and user protection.
A complicated milestone, but a milestone nonetheless. 🌎₿
