i've got a new poem in @OxonianReview. it's called "To Whom It May Delight" and it's about flowers, death, the mind, the nose, emails, beauty, living, art making, and flowers.

ALT So, while I am here,
I would like to look at every flower. & every painting
of a flower, every flower in a photograph. Every amateur’s
crappy gorgeous sappy
good drawing of a flower. Every philosopher’s
completely uncomplicated
memory of a flower, yep that one
flower that was just a halfway decent dandelion
or something, but the sudden recollection of it compels
even the most fervent Hegelian to say
Bye bye Hegel, see you never! & then
a little later, chat him up
soul to soul in the shimmery after
if ever there was one, & I would like to believe there is
a way to feel every flower delicately or furiously
placed on my grave, I’d like that,
& hope it tickles, though maybe I would like to be
ash, guess I haven’t decided
that. It’s hard to decide while I’m here
& not there
in that (let’s hope) still distant future in which I am
each & every breath gone,
each & every floral outfit
done. Every
evening of saying Hello lilies
to the lilies on my desk, thinking they might help with a line
ALT when they were even more useless than my mind but
in a mighty, godly,
gobsmacked way.
But where does it go, the mind &
every time it said I love you
& “you” meant lilies,
sunflowers, lilies, hydrangeas, the pinkest
peonies, tallest tulips, where do they go, every utterance, each
utterly floored moment of
where will I go, my fervent looking & Hegelian sniffing & this
I who
would like to be scandalized at least 3,000 more times
by the thought that I’m looking at genitalia, pretty
smelly genitalia, but
whether I
am I
ever again, let the future be stinking
full of flowers, flowerful
days flowerous nights flowers just flowering all over all futurey
with their very own awful
email system, & yet they’re good
ol’ fashioned fragrant, & yep each petal’s
going mega freaky
marvelous, unfurling from every last opening
left by my gloriously long
forgotten life.
Jennifer Militello is an award-winning poet and teacher is the founder of the New Hampshire Poetry Festival. She talked about her vision for her new role.
