Reports are confirming 80 dead, so far, and the @nytimes is reporting that a white settler couple successfully recovered a ROLEX watch from their Lāhainā home.
On Friday, Elicia Stratton searched desperately through the wreckage of her Lahaina home for the Rolex watch her parents gave her when she graduated college. Suddenly, her fiancé pulled it from the ashes. “You found it!” she said, choking up. It was damaged but still legible.

I have incels in my DMs complaining about how Lizzo is unhealthy, for some reason, and I would like to reiterate my original challenge: Do one of her dance routines and play any wind instrument. You can even do it in flats. Show her up

We r losing 2 many to suicide. & you never know what it is that created that hopelessness in a person. what I do know is many of us are trying to navigate systems that r not built for us. & we blame ourselves for not succeeding in the traditional ways that these systems encourage

While working on her PhD in chemistry at @UCLA, Samantha Mensah has put in long hours trying to make chemistry more welcoming to underrepresented people. She cofounded the nonprofit @BlackInChem, which helps Black chemists network and support each other: bit.ly/3tMQl3M

I am so angry for my disabled students. So many come to office hours to tell me about how the were turned away from jobs, told not to pursue certain coursework and careers, and told they're not a good "fit" for internships. These are goddamn brilliant kids. 1/3

Sounds a lot like grad school to me
Replying to @naomicfisher
If we saw these children’s distress as feedback, maybe instead of sending them to see a psychologist, we’d be asking how we could change the school system so it prioritised flourishing over curriculum, so it put emotional well being on a par with test scores. 5/

RT @SobsInEpi: 3 years into a pandemic, the general public is still generally confused about what to do when they test positive for COVID1…

James Cameron called the Lakota nation a “hopeless” and “dead end society” Besides that statement being a blatant lie he was actually talking about his films post ‘97. All hopeless dead ends and now he’s dying at the final dead end

Do NOT watch Avatar: The Way of Water Join Natives & other Indigenous groups around the world in boycotting this horrible & racist film. Our cultures were appropriated in a harmful manner to satisfy some 🏳 man's savior complex. No more Blueface! Lakota people are powerful!

Hello, it's me, a postdoctoral student. A student with a whole PhD, 11 first author publications, teaching classes of 200 students at a time. A mere student. I hope I get an A in being a postdoc.
Postdoctoral students and academic researchers at the University of California said they will return to work on Monday after ratifying a new contract. But workers who help teach undergraduates and assign grades remain on strike. nyti.ms/3uHBjxg

This doesn't look like good faith bargaining by UC. It is recruitment season for new grad students to our labs. They see what is happening. How am I supposed to recruit new students when they see current ones ask for enough money to pay rent and eat, and UC responds "lol no." 2/

"Railroad employees have a separate retirement system from social security & if they resign their position and take a job outside the industry they lose their railroad retirement benefit, thus holding these senior employees hostage in an unfriendly & hostile work environment. 3/
