While David Oyelowo made extremely offensive and disrespectful remarks about the Black American southern accent, panafricans were struggling to figure out how to use this moment to attack Black Americans. 🫤

Black Americans have been living through family separation our entire existence in the US. You can’t push back against immigrant mistreatment while you simultaneously look the other way when it comes to Black American mistreatment. It just doesn’t work that way.

Ms. Rachel: As the American Academy of Pediatrics says, there is no safe amount of time for a child to be in detention. The Dilley immigration detention center must be shut down. We need to end the cruel policies of family detention and family separation.

This is what we get when people who are ill equipped to have the conversation lead the conversation. Black Americans are not people of color. People of color are the jurors in the Karmelo Anthony trial. People of color are an extension of white supremacy.

In their minds, we can’t have anything of our own—not language, not culture, not even resilience. This is the problem with us viewing the continent of Africa as the Motherland. Stop letting them take credit for a culture, language, style & struggle that is uniquely #ADOS, not African.

It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together. This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.

Never forget. “So how do Latinos feel if there’s a big investment just in the African American community, and they’re looking around and saying, ‘We’re poor as well. What kind of help are we getting?’” - Barack Obama
Our @MBK_Alliance Ambassadors are examples of the outstanding young people we’ve been proud to support at the @ObamaFoundation over the years. We hope the Obama Presidential Center inspires even more.

Our actors never needed to play Biko or Mandela. They all had lucrative careers beforehand. They were doing y’all a favor by adding their names & reputations to these films. To the contrary, nobody wanted or needed to see David Oyelowo play MLK, but that movie made him. That movie carried him. He didn’t carry the movie. Where is he now, anyway? Lol
