The Polish Heritage Flight were delighted to be invited by the Chailey Airfield memorial Trust to attend their annual service on Sunday 14th June, remembering the Polish pilots and aircrew who were stationed and flew from the Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) at RAF Chailey to support the invasion of continental Europe, codenamed Operation Overlord.
RAF Chailey hosted 131 Polish Wing, with three squadrons, as well as No 18 Fighter Section, controlling three wings of three squadrons, five of which were also Polish (302, 306, 308, 315 and 317) as well as squadrons from Mysore (129), Natal (222), Belgium (349) and New Zealand (485). The station’s commanding officer, Group Captain Aleksander Gabszewicz, was the highest ranking Pole in the RAF.
The memorial service was held in perfect sunny conditions with representation from many organisations including the Polish Air Force Association, 307 Squadron Project and Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Polskich Weteranów (SPPW) Southampton, The Scout Association, members of the 23rd Sussex Home Guard re-enactment group, Royal British Legion and Polish Armed Forces standard bearers as well as many individual family members.
A welcome and short address was given by Richard Whittle, one of the memorial Trustees, during which he paid tribute all who served at RAF Chailey, in particular two pilots that failed to return from their missions. Flying Officer Mieczislaw Adamek of 317 Squadron who lost his life in the sea off Newhaven on Thursday 18th May 1944 and Flight Lieutenant Jan Kurowski of 308 Squadron who was shot down over Northern France on 21st May 1944.
Wreaths were laid, the Exhortation was given by Sussex County Royal British Legion and Last Post and Reveille played by a bugler.
The service was concluded with a rousing rendition of the Polish National Anthem!
Our deepest gratitude to PHF Team Member Nigel Leaney for representing the PHF and laying a wreath on our behalf.
