Starmer even lied about McSweeney departing—apparently he never really did!
New: Morgan McSweeney is back advising the Prime Minister – four months after he resigned over his role in the Mandelson scandal. The former No 10 chief of staff is advising Sir Keir Starmer in his moment of greatest peril, multiple government and Whitehall sources told The i Paper. McSweeney is helping the Prime Minister and has “never really gone away”, one minister said. “He has been on the end of the phone 24/7,” one source said. “He has been wargaming a leadership contest and believes Keir still has a chance if there are three or more [challengers] in the contest. He has been working out how the votes could go. It’s mad.” Exclusive with Richard Vaughn

This is appalling.
ITV viewers have demanded an apology over 'anti-Scottish comments' on Good Morning Britain today. Susanna Reid suggested the bank holiday for the World Cup was just 'about alcohol'

It is clear from our UK Index that Britain is entering what will almost certainly be a period of great international instability and challenge in a condition of precarious fragility and extraordinary exposure to systemic shocks, both internal and external. ukindex.democracycollaborati…

Labour at war with itself.
Some Labour MPs who oppose replacing Keir Starmer are refusing to campaign for Andy Burnham in Makerfield "People feel like they are being asked to take part in an act of self-harm and so aren’t happy about campaigning," one told PolHome Party chair Anna Turley has asked all Labour MPs to canvass in the by-election twice during the campaign, plus polling day on 18 June However, multiple Starmer loyalists plan to defy that instruction, with some saying they will stay away altogether, @harriet_symonds reports exclusively politicshome.com/news/articl…

One striking observation from our UK Index of Systemic Trends is the extent to which our politics is organised around the pursuit of a chimera—the chimera of economic growth.

After the Scottish indy referendum, Corbyn, Trump, Brexit, you'd think the establishment, even out of enlightened self-interest, would recognise the need to act, to intervene, to right the ship of state. But we have the most myopic and selfish political class in the rich world.

By no means the biggest story out of the latest Mandelson files release - but its remarkable that serving ministers actually spent their time trying to get fellow PPE grads to vote for Mandelson in the Oxford chancellor race. Clown country stuff.

#mandelsonfiles are clarifying. A UK Government where values are optional, policy is incidental, and facilitates high public office for egoed half wits. They also expose a Labour Party devoid of values consumed by petty rivalries and shallow sniping. bbc.co.uk/news/live/cy02zzl4…
