I think these character designs are quite cool. They are clearly inspired by the original SNES game puppets.
But since this is a remake of Starfox64 which has a very different aesthetic to the original SNES game, this design choice doesn't make sense.

After years of investigation, Reuters journalists have discovered that the street artist behind the pseudonym Banksy is Robin Gunningham, a street artist from Bristol who later changed his name to David Jones.
In 2008, The Mail on Sunday attempted to uncover Banksy's identity, after which the artist likely changed his name.
Banksy himself has not commented on this revelation.
