The EU is 6% of global emissions. Committing economic harakiri in response to climate concerns is pure vanity. Europe can't save the planet because the continent doesn't have any meaningful influence on the outcome.

It isn't unexpected that the focus of the Bun Rust rewrite is on the anti-Zig side more than anything, since the internet loves to hate. What is unexpected and unfortunate is that leadership within Bun hasn't tried to steer the conversation away from that at all. There are so many positive and interesting takeaways from this and I'm not really seeing any of them pushed as the primary message. A positive thing that hasn't been talked about at all is how far Bun came thanks to Zig. And even if you dump it now, its meaningful for how good Zig was to even build a product to this point and impact by any metric. I would've loved to see anyone in leadership say this. On the interesting side is how fungible programming languages are nowadays. Programming languages used to be LOCK IN, and they're increasingly not so. You think the Bun rewrite in Rust is good for Rust? Bun has shown they can be in probably any language they want in roughly a week or two. Rust is expendable. Its useful until its not then it can be thrown out. That's interesting! There's been a lot of talk about memory safety and no doubt Rust provides more guarantees than Zig. But I'd love to see a better analysis of why Bun in particular suffered so much rather than take the language-blame path. How could engineering as a practice been more rigorous to prevent this? What were the largest sources of crashes other programs should watch out for? How does Rust prevent them? How could Zig theoretically prevent them? That's interesting. I know the official blog post hasn't come out yet from Bun. But they're smart enough to know that that PR would stir up controversy the moment it opened, or they should've been. And plenty in the company have been tweeting and writing about it. Its somewhat telling to me in various dimensions what they chose to talk about first. I tend to think I'm pretty good at corporate PR/comms (especially when it comes to developer audiences) and I think appealing to the negative is never the right long term strategy; it does work to get short term eyes though.

So we’re judging a runtime by its charm now? I think @jarredsumner made a pragmatic decision by not fighting @ziglang and focusing on building what matters. That’s a positive sign.
And we were thinking about using Bun in production. But now Bun is dead to me, not because of Rust, but how was it done. Also, no charm left.

Adding #FrameworkLaptop #Framework13 for visibility. Anyone else with a Framework 13 seeing cracks around the expansion card ports?
I genuinely love my Framework 13 and I’ve had it since the early days But it’s disappointing to see the bottom chassis cracking around the USB C ports on both sides, right where the expansion cards sit Normal use, never abused, never dropped Anyone else seen this? @FrameworkPuter

N’importe quoi! L’open source est par défaut moins sensible aux attaques que le close-source et ça va aussi être bcp plus facile de trouver les failles et patcher pr les maintainers/platformes de type github/hf

Would be so cool if OpenAI open-sourced Sora as they're shutting down the app! Would be an amazing contribution to the field and make all the efforts of the teams working on it even more meaningful!
We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work. – The Sora Team

If you are not too far from France, and you are discarding old hardware, consider donating it to @videolan. As you've seen, we did lately updates to VLC to fix support for Windows XP and macOS 10.7 (and iOS9). Because you should not need to buy new hardware because of software.

The Python 3.14 rebuild is running right now. The mirrors have been synced and AUR packages in our repository have been rebuild. There should be no issues anymore with updating to new Python version! Rank your mirrors before updating.

Smart Turn v3.1. Smart Turn is a completely open source, open data, open training code turn detection model for voice AI, trained on audio data across 23 languages. The model operates on the input audio in a voice agent pipeline. Each time the user pauses briefly, this model runs and returns a binary decision about whether the user has finished speaking or not. The 3.1 release has two big improvements: 1. New data sets for English and Spanish, collected and labeled by contributors Liva AI, Midcentury, and MundoAI. The majority of the training data for the Smart Turn model is synthetically generated. Using synthetic data makes it possible to scale up training for a model like this. We've done a lot of work on the synthetic data pipeline to emulate as much of the natural variability of human speech as possible. But accurately labeled human data is very valuable and has a measurable impact on model quality. The 3.1 training run incorporates three new human data sets. 2. An unquantized, GPU-oriented version of the model alongside the ONNX version intended to run on CPUs. The Smart Turn ONNX quant delivers a result in 12ms on my laptop and 70ms on a typical cloud vCPU. That's fast! Because this is an audio model, you can run it in parallel with transcription and it will generally give you a result before the transcription final chunks are available. But if you have GPUs in your fleet, you can run the model even faster. (Or, more to the point, very scalably.) Inference runs in ~2ms on an NVIDIA L40S. Read the launch blog post if you're interested in more details. And if you're running this model yourself, see notes in the blog post about ONNX runtime optimization. The Smart Turn model is fully integrated into Pipecat, and available in Pipecat Cloud.

my salary after seed round (shortly after above tweet) was $100k and stayed that until yesterday. We had more than runway for me to have a higher salary but I didn’t like the idea while the company made $0 in revenue

We no longer have any active servers in France and are continuing the process of leaving OVH. We'll be rotating our TLS keys and Let's Encrypt account keys pinned via accounturi. DNSSEC keys may also be rotated. Our backups are encrypted and can remain on OVH for now. Our App Store verifies the app store metadata with a cryptographic signature and downgrade protection along with verification of the packages. Android's package manager also has another layer of signature verification and downgrade protection. Our System Updater verifies updates with a cryptographic signature and downgrade protection along with another layer of both in update_engine and a third layer of both via verified boot. Signing channel release channel names is planned too. Our update mirrors are currently hosted on sponsored servers from ReliableSite (Los Angeles, Miami) and Tempest (London). London is a temporary location due to an emergency move from a provider which left the dedicated server business and will move. More sponsored update mirrors are coming. Our ns1 anycast network is on Vultr and our ns2 anycast network is on BuyVM since both support BGP for announcing our own IP space. We're moving our main website/network servers used for default OS connections to a mix of Vultr BuyVM locations. We have 5 servers in Canada with OVH with more than static content and basic network services: email, Matrix, discussion forum, Mastodon and attestation. Our plan is to move these to Netcup root servers or a similar provider short term and then colocated servers in Toronto long term. France isn't a safe country for open source privacy projects. They expect backdoors in encryption and for device access too. Secure devices and services are not going to be allowed. We don't feel safe using OVH for even a static website with servers in Canada/US via their Canada/US subsidiaries. We were likely going to be able to release experimental Pixel 10 support very soon and it's getting disrupted. The attacks on our team with ongoing libel and harassment have escalated, raids on our chat rooms have escalated and more. It's rough right now and support is appreciated.
