This is called a purge — injected, highly pressurized wastewater blasting out of an old well, while still more spreads below ground. These incidents have been happening all over Oklahoma. I spent a year investigating these pollution events for @propublica @readfrontier

Watching @npbowlin’s report on unplugged oil wells spontaneously flooding homes in Oklahoma, having that feeling there's so much happening, at any given time, that exists entirely outside our systems to know it (except ppl like nick do help us know it) youtube.com/watch?v=4xqvOGVV…

The Merediths were forced to abandon their house after it filled with black goo, reaching gas concentrations at explosive levels. Despite evidence of oil and gas pollution, the state “wanted to act like it would go away,” the family says. readfrontier.org/stories/oil…

I am among the McClatchy journalists withholding my byline from AI-generated content. I cover sensitive stories that should never be repackaged or altered in any way by artificial intelligence. Whether the story is about sexual abuse or immigrants caged at Alligator Alcatraz, our journalists take great care to ensure that their material is accurate, fair and conveys invaluable aspects of humanity that AI simply can't do.
New: McClatchy journalists at newspapers in 4 states are now withholding their bylines from A.I.-generated content as tensions grow over a "content scaling agent" tool that the company rolled out nytimes.com/2026/05/01/busin…

Of the 6,400 orphaned oil wells in Louisiana, 2,100 were added to the list in the last year alone. Just four companies orphaned 1,200 of those wells. Here's where they are:

Israel is now openly claiming it is justified in killing journalists because the reporters may expose the positions of Israeli forces. That is a radical and stark break from the norms of warfare and truly must be stopped.
Replying to @ryangrim
Here is from the IDF’s justification for why they killed the 3 journalists. (They don’t even bother to explain the other two.) “the terrorist Ali Shuaib worked to incite against the Defense Army forces and citizens of the State of Israel, using his platform as a means to disseminate propaganda materials for Hezbollah.” “And during Operation Roaring Lion as well, he continued his activity and reported on the locations of Defense Army forces operating in southern Lebanon.” Israel is openly admitting they killed him for reporting.

Very good reporting from the NYT in Cuba: “Elsewhere in the hospital, doctors and nurses dashed to ventilators that were pumping air into the lungs of sick newborns. The machines’ battery systems died years ago, so health workers have to squeeze a rubber pump to keep the babies breathing until the generators start to work. “With fuel running so short, the gas generators may be only a temporary savior. Nurses in the hospital’s neonatal unit said they already have plans for a fully powerless hospital: swaddle newborns in blankets and put them back into dead incubators, hoping they stay warm enough to survive.” nytimes.com/2026/03/26/world…

great piece by @gabydvj on the political incoherence of the Abundance and MABA movements, which have a difficult time squaring the American people’s love of public lands with ideologies built around privatization

Here are current annual snowpack levels across the west compared to yearly averages. Rough. On yesterday’s show, I covered the Western Governors Association’s comments on ways they are trying to enhance the collective snowpack across the American West to reduce wildfire risk.
New Episode Out: link below On Today’s Show: * Colorado has purchased a strike team of wildfire drones from Seneca for wildfire suppression. The large suppression drones can deliver 50 gallons of foam, for a total of 250 gallons per strike team. * They are looking at creating permanent wildfire drone bases across the state. * Ring doorbell cameras have launched a program that feeds your home camera footage into AI to detect wildfires. “Fire Watch.” * California cities have begun Zone Zero rules for home hardening. Residents who do not comply with the 5-foot rule could face fines as early as this June. * The Western Governors Association releases a statement on snowpack deficits, saying it will use cloud seeding to address them. Nine states now have active programs, with Utah’s Program now the largest in the world. * Arizona fire agencies sign on to pilot program to use OroraTech’s wildfire satellite detection system and fire progression algorithm. * British Columbia boosts wildfire budgets and workforce. * Full operational update.
