My score for Willie Simmons’s Sticks & Holler is out now on bandcamp. It was so fun to explore local sounds from the Appalachias. I’m grateful to have worked on projects like this, and for the support from my friends & colleagues. Listen/purchase here: eriknordgren.bandcamp.com/al…

I looooove bleak week. Copped the Hanekes immediately. My boyfriend is going to see the Piano Teacher for the FIRST TIME in a packed Egyptian Theater with the legend herself. Impossibly special.

#LeeCroninsTheMummy is the real fuckin deal. Nasty, goopy, gory, and schlocky. Basically Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Mummy, so if you dug his style on Rise you’ll love this take on Mummy. Laia Costa remains one of my favorite actresses and Natalie Grace steals every scene she’s in.

FACES OF DEATH sitting at a cool 65, which, considering it’s also a meta interrogation of youth, technology, social media, and hyperviolence, is a Michael Haneke 100

Up front in a packed house this Sunday evening for the Walter Murch masterclass at American Cinematheque. Brought my copy of Blink of an Eye that I’ve had for 10 years and an empty notebook so you already know I’m locked in

Never bought a ticket for something so fast in my life. I read In The Blink of an Eye in college and it remains one of if not the most important book on editing you can get. As a composer, I think understanding editing is almost as important as understanding how to write music.

Tonight after dinner I had drinks next to Chloe Zhao, and got an opportunity to express a few of the emotions her films stir up in me, and how moved I am by where she (and by extension the legendary Lukasz Zal this year) places her camera. One of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

That’s a wrap on Telluride Film Festival 2025, here’s where it all landed for me. The top four are very VERY close. I’m exhausted.

Floored by IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT. Revenge films trace the path of violence to catharsis, but here violence is a canopy. Catharsis is hesitant, creating space to consider if the real perpetrator is an individual or a system. Bone-chilling final moments. Top 5 of the year for me.

Hard to even collect my thoughts on this. One of the best scripts I’ve ever seen (heard?). An incredibly moving character piece about performance and the nature of familial strife. Boils just beneath the surface. And that ending!!!!!!!

PILLION was excellent. Harry Lighton updates the textures and frames of Kenneth Anger into a bright and resonant rom com. VERY funny, unreal work from Harry Melling. Alexander Skarsgård is magnetic, tells stories with single looks. So much under the surface, loved it a lot.

That being her directorial debut is blowing my mind, unbelievable work pulling double duty as director and DP. I can see why she shot all of Dannemora. Some of the best frames of the entire show. Jesus.

All praise for Jessica Lee Gagné, who makes imho a brilliant directorial debut.
