What I love about Steinbeck’s writings for Cathy is even when she’s essentially evil without any cause, the story remains realistic enough to show how the world is still violent to ‘evil’ itself when it takes the shape of a woman.

I don't think I've met a character like Cathy before. She's such a literary provocation. reading about her is honestly scary 🫠

And, what’s so fascinating about her depravity? She’s patient with it. She keeps in mind the danger of haste, and is painstakingly willing to linger with sufferings for the sake of destructive, lethal paybacks. Cathy learns that time/duration invents a more natural evil.
