The key to building a great infrastructure product in this order:
1. Stable - does what you need, always.
2. Extendable - even if it does not do something today, give your customer's escape hatches to do things they need on top of it.
3. Fast.

One of the best things we ever did was build an extensions framework on Nuon.
Our customers often end up migrating existing customer infrastructure and environments into Nuon. This can mean importing state, using a break-glass to import a data dump and more.

I think this pattern is pretty neat. We've seen customers building QA extensions, using this expand onboarding, building their own clis etc.

Our BYOC customers like Retool and Restate are also using Nuon to power single-tenant customers. Two use cases, one tool.
Single-tenant installs have all the same challenges as BYOC, except vendors get greater operational control.
Deploying at any scale to sensitive customers needs rigor. Policies, roles, change controls and more all come out of the box with Nuon.

At Nuon, we eat our own dogfood. We run Nuon as a BYOC service in our customer's accounts.
It's not easy, but it is insightful and makes us better. Here are some of the hardest challenges we see, which you might see as well when offering your BYOC:

9. Previews: every change you are making has to have previews. Think, terraform-cloud but for every single part of your app. The app has to be templated, so you need to be able to see what's changing accordingly.

I'll cap it at 10, but I could go on for ages. Packaging. It's funny, I often say this is not our value prop. It's a commodity problem, but it's still hard. Ultimately, you are packaging your entire app, and that's hard.
We have a lot of fun stories with our BYOC option. Some more painful than others.
