Even my most hardcore GD voter relative did not expect the GD to get more than 45% with all possible manipulations, and hoped the GD would then just bribe individual opposition MPs. I have nine kids. If I was Jewish you’d probably assume I’m Haredi. But I’m actually more of a moderate Sunni. I practice my religion. I fast, I pray. But I am basically quite liberal in my ideas. I don't ask my daughters to put on a hijab. I don't ask my wife to wear a burqa. I don’t ask them to pray if they don't want to. My religious faith is between me and God. And I try to live up to my ideals: to be worthy of my faith in Allah, and Allah’s faith in me. For me this is what religion is about: values, ideals. And I believe there are no religions richer in values and ideals than Judaism and Islam. There’s a lot I can say about Islam. But here I’m going to talk about Judaism, if I’m allowed to do that. Judaism brought to the world the core value of human dignity and the sanctity of life – all humanist ideals spring from this value. Sometimes I think that’s all we need – and I’m talking to both sides of this conflict, Israelis and Palestinians. Recognising the innate human dignity in one another, seeing each other as beings created in God’s image. If we not only believe this, but genuinely think it, speak it, act it, then our two peoples will live in harmony. It really is that simple.
