I’m genuinely saddened by the situation, but it’s important to understand that this is a form of protest against the xenophobia and mistreatment that many other Africans have faced in South Africa. While the circumstances are unfortunate, the reaction stems from a deeper frustration over the ongoing treatment of fellow Africans and a call for greater solidarity and accountability across the continent.
“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different,” Williams said. “Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans. We almost shed tears, but it’s truly sad.”
