The Stratospheric Optical Rubidium Clock Experiment (SORCE) is participating in the @csa_asc/@CNES's #STRATOS balloon launch this summer. Based at @uoftphysics
See that bright blue line? That’s where our overlapped lasers are exciting rubidium.
Once excited, these atoms emit 420 nm light.
We typically detect this light using a sensitive PMT, but in this instance we can see it with our bare eyes!
Taking “portable” to a whole new level – NIST researchers have developed an experimental, next generation optical atomic clock that’s about the size of a coffee bean! Learn about this tiny, precision-packed instrument: nist.gov/news-events/news/20…
ALT Square gray cube with two square holes in it and a gold square in between the holes, and a dark brown coffee bean leaning against the cube.
I haven’t been great at updating twitter due to the lack of sleep, BUT: @opticalclock survived a landing that clocked in above 100g!
Very happy with that.
We’re heading back to Toronto with our small but mighty clock in tow.
Highlights why atomic clock research by #innovative teams like @opticalclock could have such a tremendous impact on the success of future space missions.
Our Strato-Science team is preparing for its second balloon flight tonight in #Timmins, following a successful flight earlier this week.

We had the delight of explaining SORCE to @scgQuasar, the Science Advisor to the @csa_asc!
Hopefully we’ve convinced you there’s so many cool space things we can do with optical atomic clocks ⏰⏰
T-2 days until the launch window opens.
We're grateful to the generous sponsors that made this mission possible: thanks @NSERC_CRSNG
and thank you Branco Weiss Fellowship at @ETH_en!

Scientists from Canada and France are hoping to launch this year’s first stratospheric balloon as early as Sunday from the Timmins stratospheric balloon base.
@uoftphysics Professor Kaley Walker's team is there preparing! Read more here:

1 week until SORCE departs for Timmins for @csa_asc’s STRATOS flight campaign!
We’re making final changes to our electronics plate, which involves lots of soldering and lots of cable control.
