kpop bands can do perfect facsimiles of r&b vamps or trap beats or whatever but it's overtly out of commercial interest, it has no reverence or even interest in music as a social product with history, and it's up front about it which is what makes it so unpleasant and uncanny.

i think one reason it's so bad is also connected to why adorno was so wrong about jazz and american pop in general. kpop, by design, is divorced from the popular (in marxist sense) genres and folk traditions that historically gave other pop music its context and relevance

it's like they set out to prove adorno's laziest critique of the culture industry correct, almost a bad parody.
Every time I hear a song from one of the top-selling k-pop groups, I become more certain that k-pop is the worst form of internationally popular music overall.
