Lack of ability is one thing. But the absence of passion and desire throughout a vital home game against already relegated opponents (who were also poor but not as bad as Os), is unnacceptable.

With great sadness I share this report of the terrible, tragic death of ex-Os striker Colin Flatt who top-scored in the relegated 1965-66 side. Colin was a good mate of my dad's and we'd meet up with him for beers until not long before he became ill.

We never knew the extent of what Colin went through at the end - it was all very vague and now we know why. He was a good mate of dad's and, not very long before he became ill, we'd regularly meet up with him for beers in the Coopers Arms at Chadwell Heath . . .

. . . or he'd join us at Orient. He was a great character, always made me laugh. One day in the late 80s, when my Sunday team was short, I got him and dad to make up the numbers. At one point Flatty sat on the ball in midfield and invited the other team to get it off him!

Sad to read of the passing of #MarkLazarus, aged 86, one of football's great characters of the 60s and 70s whom I was fortunate to interview at his Romford home for my book, ORIENT IN THE 70s. Mark was full of anecdotes, honesty & humility. RIP, Mark.
