What a day! So overwhelmed by the love and support of friends, family, and of course, my supervisors. I can now finally call myself Dr. Chakravarty 🥹 Fahrt endet hier! Thanks @voigtbatlab and Viktoriia for this enriching journey.
A celebration of #bats of the Himalayas! Very well done, Rohit, during your PhD defence. It's been a pleasure to join you on this path. Please continue doing the wonderful research you do and helping to protect our global diversity Dr Chakravarty

A new species of bat from the Himalayas - the Himalayan Long-tailed Myotis (Myotis himalaicus). My first new species; a discovery made with my favourite collaborators from my favourite place in the Himalayas: Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarakhand!

Can't publish the post without thanking my amazing field team, funders, and the Uttarakhand Forest Department without whom these discoveries were impossible!

Why are these results important? Data deficient (DD) species are typically excluded from conservation projects. Funders consider funding projects to seek DD species as a gamble. However, several papers suggest that DD species may actually be threatened.

Take-home message: we need to fund more expeditions to document the distribution and ecology of mountain-dwelling bats before we lose them in oblivion. 📸Kashmir Long-eared Bat: a species restricted to highlands of the Himalayas

Kelaart's Pipistrelles flourishing in our Nagpur home. Juveniles flying around exploring the house and crash landing everywhere. @thetoonguy has become an expert bat catcher and our dogs don't get started by bats any more. No gloves as I wasn't prepared to catch bats in my home!

I had a delightful time teaching ecology and biodiversity sampling at @CoexConsortium - one-of-its-kind fellowship to impart formal training to grassroots conservationists. The camaraderie among the fellows is worth experiencing. I thank the Consortium for this kind invitation.

Question to molecular ecologists in India. We want to outsource the entire process of DNA metabarcoding to study the diet of some insectivorous bats. Please recommend private genomics labs (preferably in Bangalore or Delhi)!

Thanks for your kind words, @yaminivijayan ! 😊
One of my favourite things about editing with @darknlightzine is that it widens my perspectives in so many unexpected ways. Like this interview of @paintedbat by @susieqllap, on a bat call library: darknlight.com/projects/inte…

We brought together a room full of bat researchers and conservationists in India for the first time since 2002! Looking forward to great outputs and wonderful collaborations. Onwards and upwards 🦇📔
We partnered with @BatConIntl to host the ‘State of India’s Bats’ (SoIBats) workshop at @NCBS_Bangalore on 17 and 18 June 2024. Participants discussed steps to improve research on the ecology of bats, enhance monitoring of threatened bat populations and species, and lots more!

🥲🥲🥲 Check out Pritha's cool study about the moth diet of the Lesser False Vampire. Now, technically, we can attend a bat conference together 😬
Happy to share again :) and thank @paintedbat who taught me everything bats as I only knew moths! Find out why and which moths get hunted by a bat with a unique hunting strategy 👇 #preypredator #moths
