Lead Organizer, RAC-NJ. Previously: attorney, teacher, blogger. Opinions are my own/ RT doesn’t indicate support. I ❤️ NJ. I believe in public schools.
Mayor Baraka’s arrest was shocking — and he should be released immediately. I called ICE leadership who relayed that the mayor was arrested for trespassing.
However, video clearly shows the mayor outside the gates of Delaney Hall facility when he was arrested. I’ve reached out to DHS Secretary directly and am in touch with the members of Congress who conducted the oversight inspection.
Developments are unfolding fast and I will work to keep everyone updated.
Reopening Delaney Hall won’t fix our broken immigration system or make us safer—it just pads the pockets of a private company that prioritizes profit over people.
I recently inspected an ICE detention center in New Jersey and saw how the Trump administration's claims of focusing on dangerous criminals don’t match the reality. People like Karim Daoud—who has lived here for 21 years, has no criminal record, and has a wife and kids who are U.S. citizens—are being detained. Detaining individuals like him doesn’t improve safety—it only creates division and fear in our communities.
We need transparency and accountability to be certain of safe and humane conditions at places like Delaney Hall. Most of all, we must push for real immigration reform across our nation. - AK

The John Lewis #NJVRA Voter Empowerment Act has PASSED Assembly committee!
I’m a strong believer in public education. I am worried that someone who is comfortable being in the pocket of Betsy DeVos is no friend of public education.
The Gateway Tunnel agreement was signed today. That’s great. And it’s a reminder that ELECTIONS matter. If Chris Christie hadn’t canceled the ARC Tunnel in 2010, the Hudson River tunnel would have been in service for 6 years. Instead we are 11 years from a new tunnel.
Today's SCOTUS ruling makes it easier to jail & fine unhoused people for sleeping outside.
Handcuffs don't get anyone closer to housing — they only make homelessness worse. The real solution is providing affordable housing and the support services people need to become stable.
Hey NJ - I am making way too much progress knitting this sock today while serving as a poll worker, which means my polling location is really quiet. Please get out and vote! #njprimary#newjerseyprimary#njelection#votenj
Hey New Jersey - our Primary Elections are today. Please get out and vote. As one of your friendly neighborhood poll workers, I am making way too much progress on knitting this sock today, which means our polling place is way too quiet. Polls are open until 8 pm.
I’ve been stewing about the shenanigans that disenfranchised me, my family, my neighbors, and all LD27 D primary voters. I worked the polls on June 6 bc I believe in democracy. D or R, autocracy is autocracy. Shame on all who are perpetuating this farce.
In Birmingham at the Civil Rights Institute. Learning the history of segregation in the city.
How exactly is this different from NJ today?
Reminder - the State is defending our segregated school system in court RIGHT NOW.
And now my job is to help empower other people the way that the people who taught me empowered me. I have had amazing teachers and incredible opportunities. Thank you to @valeriestrauss for making that call 9 years ago. It changed my life more than you will ever know.
And every so often, someone shares a meme that quotes the conclusion of that blog post that ran in the Washington Post 9 years ago—so thank you also to @valeriestrauss for providing me with the opportunity to experience being a meme!
Proud of RAC-NJ leader Rabbi Ethan Prosnit, who is a guest of newly elected congressman Tom Kean, Jr. at tonight’s #SOTU — with Rabbi Prosnit’s leadership, RAC-NJ works with leaders from both parties to repair the world for the sake of our children and our grandchildren.
I am proud to have Rabbi Ethan Prosnit of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield join me in the House chamber for the President’s #SOTU tonight. Rabbi Prosnit is an outstanding leader in our community, a devoted steward of his temple and a mentor to many young people in his congregation.
Our message in response to the devastating attacks in #MontereyPark during the Lunar New Year. As we mourn those killed, we stand together and ask those to support our community during this difficult time.
