Are we talking turkey… hematology? - Unlike humans, turkey RBCs are nucleated - Heterophils (neutrophils for birds) tend to increase as a stress response – otherwise lymphocytes rule the differential roost - The PT for turkeys is prolonged relative to human (around 17 sec) - Turkey RBC have been used as reagents for tetanus immunity as well as other applications in the lab - The smear shows a WBC infected by the parasite Leucocytozoon smithi – birds get different leukotropic diseases than us!

This happened to me once! - Switch is very large and easily accessible for patients if the machine is at bedside - Important to be aware of this if the patient is very agitated -- may be seen in patients with encephalitis ex. N-methyl D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis
Have you ever had an apheresis patient turn off the machine?
