The idea that there will be a third Temple in Jerusalem prior to the return of Jesus has deep roots in historic Christian teaching, going all the way back to the early Church Fathers.
This is Irenaeus of Lyon, c. 180 AD--hardly a modern dispensationalist:
"But when this Antichrist shall have devastated all things in this world, he will reign for three years and six months, and sit in the temple at Jerusalem; and then the Lord will come from heaven in the clouds, in the glory of the Father..." (Against Heresies, Book V.30.4).
