The championship primarily belongs to longtime (and long-suffering) Knicks fans, but I'm also happy for all the New Yorkers who don't follow the NBA but jumped on the finals bandwagon (myself very much included) because they saw the Knicks uniting and representing this city.

Very true. You really saw this with the Mamdani scavenger hunt last summer. Many Millennial and Generation Z New Yorkers have a really passionate civic pride in NYC – even though (or maybe because) they're much less patriotic about the U.S. in the Trump era.
These last 12 months have really showcased a new generation that is extremely enthusiastic about participating in historic New York City moments
