Grok saying being selected for the Play With Pete Invitational is more exclusive than the Masters ticket lottery. šŸ‘€ PWPI šŸ’ÆšŸ“ˆšŸ”„
4 Jun 2025
The odds of being selected for the Play With Pete Invitational (PWPI) are likely very low due to its exclusivity, but exact numbers are unavailable. The event, hosted by Pete Pappas, selects only 4–8 players annually for prestigious courses like The Olympic Club. With potentially thousands of interested golfers, odds could be around 1 in 1,250 or worse, depending on eligibility. The selection process is discretionary, possibly based on golfing ability or X engagement, making it more exclusive than the Masters ticket lottery (1 in 182) but less unlikely than the Browns winning the Super Bowl (1 in 251). Lack of public data on applicants creates uncertainty.

Player Spotlight: Dave Boyza If PWPIPasatiempo had a little bit of everything Boyza was a big reason for that. Boyza sniped 300 yard drives dead-center fairway. Other drives he discovered parts of the course not shown on the scorecard. Boyza walked in long distance putts. While other putts returned back to his feet like a yo-yo on a string. Boyza peppered greens with elite control and was rejected by others like he did the golf gods wrong. Boyza went Full Pasatiempo. It was a Hero’s Journey that would have made Alister MacKenzie proud (and amused). And it was simply glorious to watch.

Just wrapped up Pre-Championship Interview with Matt Fitzpatrick and his entire vibe was Alpha Energy and Menace. Matt wants Shinnecock firm and fast. He wants Shinnecock as difficult as possible. And said (contrary to popular opinion) they didn’t lose the course in 2018. I’m not sure there’s any player in better form and more confident than Fitzy. A stern test is coming and he’s wholly embraced the challenge.

Player Spotlight: Mike Kovatch Kovatch got that dawg in him. Mike didn’t just practice more than any other player for PWPIPasatiempo, he practiced more than any other player in Play With Pete Invitational history. And his four birdies on the day were the most of any player. In between club twirls, fist pumps, and walking off putts Mike was always smiling, sauntering around the course, and taking pics of Pasatiempo seemingly every chance he got. Despite starting his day with two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey through the first five holes, Kovatch still shot a 78. And let that be a lesson to us all. You Don’t Mess with the Kovatch.

Titleist GTS3 Driver vs. Titleist GT3 Driver Comparative Review šŸ‘€ Is the new GTS3 better than the previous model GT3? Yes… and No. (On near center hits) ā–ŖļøGTS3 0.3 mph more ball speed than GT3 ā–ŖļøGTS3 1.5° higher launch than GT3 ā–ŖļøGTS3 28 rpm lower spin than GT3 ā–ŖļøGTS3 6.4 more carry yards than GT3 ā–ŖļøGTS3 0.8 more total yards than GT3 (On toe misses) ā–ŖļøGT3 0.2 mph more ball speed than GTS3 ā–ŖļøGTS3 0.1° higher launch than GT3 ā–ŖļøGT3 164 rpm lower spin than GTS3 ā–ŖļøGT3 1.1 more carry yards than GTS3 ā–ŖļøGT3 5.2 more total yards than GTS3 (On high misses) ā–ŖļøGTS3 2.0 mph more ball speed than GT3 ā–ŖļøGT3 0.7° higher launch than GTS3 ā–ŖļøGT3 58 rpm lower spin than GTS3 ā–ŖļøGT3 0.8 more carry yards than GTS3 ā–ŖļøGT3 2.1 more total yards than GTS3 (Impressions on Center Hits) A lot to unwrap here. First, sound and feel between GT3 and GTS3 is pretty much identical. There’s a slight difference in shape between the two heads and GTS3 did have me swinging up to 1 mph faster on average (which might account for slightly faster ball speed on center hits). GTS3 had a clear advantage over GT3 in carry yards but just a marginal advantage in total yards. Dispersion was about 5 yards tighter (closer) to center on both left and right misses with GT3. However downrange dispersion was tighter with GTS3 by about 5 yards as well. My fitter said most players experience more spin with GTS3 than GT3 so my slightly lower GTS3 spin isn’t typical, but on misses GTS3 did in fact spin more. (Impressions on Toe Misses) This is where it got even more interesting. GT3 maintained distance better than GTS3 with greater total distance of 5 yards. And GT3 also had tighter downrange dispersion by about 5 yards. So dispersion advantages flipped from GTS3 better on center strikes but GT3 better on toe misses. However GTS3 took away the really bad right misses (almost 10 yards closer to center than GT3). GTS3 is definitely a more stable head than GT3 and doesn’t twist open as much on toe misses. And again the role reversal is interesting with GT3 having tighter left-right dispersion on center hits but GTS3 bringing the right miss in tighter on toe strikes. (Impressions on High Misses) Similarly to toe misses GT3 retained total distance better than GTS3 (but by only a few yards). And again here GTS3 also took the bad right miss away better (but this time by only about 3 yards). GTS3 also had tighter downrange dispersion by about 5 yards on high misses (like it did on center hits) versus GT3 having tighter downrange dispersion on toe misses. (Conclusion) The most prominent advantage of GTS3 over GT3 is the higher launch on good strikes. I was getting almost 15 feet higher peak heights with GTS3. And for players who don’t have very fast swing speeds this will translate to more carry distance. When we talk forgiveness however GTS3 and GT3 each do certain things better than the other. On good strikes GTS3 had tighter downrange dispersion, but GT3 had better left-right dispersion. So choosing one over the other really depends on what’s more important to you. On toe and high misses GTS3 is more stable than GT3 and takes the right side away more, but GT3 still retains downrange total yards better on these misses. So again it’s a choice (between the two) of what’s more important to you. As always, the same shaft was used comparing both drivers( in this case the Graphite Design AD DI 6S), the driver lofts and settings were also the same, and the same ball was used.

Player Spotlight: Nick McInally Nick was our glue guy. He’s a true gentleman of the game, a champion of extraordinary company, and the rare golfer who elevates any round with his mischievous laughter, charismatic wit, and salt of the earth presence. But don’t let that fool you. McInally is simultaneously also trying to crush your spirits on the scorecard. He competes like there’s an ancestral Coat of Arms on the line. By the soulful swinging Scotsman’s own admission Pasatiempo got him on the math (he fired an 83). But everyone watching the livestream knew the victory lap belonged to Nick. Because if golf had a first overall draft pick for playing partners McInally would never make it past No. 1.

Eddie the Caddie said I have the best hair at Pasatiempo all week, Kovatch was thinking all-time PWPI scoring record of 76 stepping on the tee, and Nick said let’s get a livestream viewer some Callaway limited edition U.S. Open balls on this hole. So four GIR on the last hole of PWPIPasatiempo for the gents? Yes. And no. Kovatch and Dietzen hit great shots and gave themselves birdie looks. Nick’s shot was the best on any Pasatiempo par-3 on the day for the group and he stuck it close (golf clap). And Boyza’s shot looked like it was better than all of theirs…. Until it wasn’t. Boyza’s shot hit the green and ricocheted hard and left 90 degrees into the barranca. All guessed it had to be a sprinkler head but there was nothing of the sort where his ball landed. The ghost of Alister MacKenzie having one final laugh at Boyza’s expense. Walking across the bridge Dietz and Boyza got into it about who’s birdie won a viewer the driver (I encouraged it but some fine acting on both their parts). Dietzen stalked his long birdie putt for a tap in par, Kovatch left his downhill birdie putt just an inch short, and Nick burned the edge to wrap it all up. The last PGAPappas logo Chrome balls went to @billnet52 and the US Open Chrome balls to @danielrobison. It was my absolute pleasure to watch these gents play Pasatiempo and have you all join us. Players and caddies handshakes and photos on the 18th green, and Play With Pete Invitational Pasatiempo was an All-Time great one.

Alister Mackenzie called the 16th at Pasatiempo ā€œthe best two-shot hole I know.ā€ Many consider No. 16 one of the greatest par-4s ever designed in the world. And two of the gents played this masterpiece like they had MacKenzie’s notes in their back pocket. A treacherous, semi-blind tee shot didn’t faze Nick or Kovatch and both hit absolutely perfect drives. While Boyza and Dietzen ran their drives just a few feet into the right rough. And then we saw two of the best shots in PWPI history let alone best shots anyone can hit into this three-tiered, undulating green. Boyza came literally inches from dropping it in for eagle and cleaned up an easy putt for birdie. Then Dietz almost did the exact same thing also coming just inches from eagle. He also had an easy birdie putt. And Nick announced ā€œI don’t think I’ve ever felt this much pressure over a shotā€ having to follow them up. Boyza and Dietzen both had birdies on this Callaway Quantum driver giveaway hole and @SchwandtyPippen you can thanks Boyza and/or Dietzen for winning you a new driver.

It’s the shortest par-3 at Pasatiempo and the gents took advantage. Boyza and Dietzen gave themselves birdie looks. Nick and Kovatch missed just off the green. And I was secretly hoping at least one of them would have found those diabolical bunkers. They were also aware of the challenge immediately ahead peering over to the iconic 16th hole tee box. And fireworks were about to go off. Four pars on this hole. And for being on Team Dietzen @the1andonlyjonesy you have PGAPappas logo Chrome balls headed your way.

Dietzen with the near hole out eagle on No. 13 at Pasatiempo. He’d make an easy birdie (his first of two on the back-nine) at PWPIPasatiempo.

Kovatch, Nick, and Dietzen bomb their drives again. Just locked in now. Nick suggests if I ever become a course architect every PGAPappas course must have an espresso machine on every hole. Agreed. Nick’s Golf Origins story reveals he grew up near St. Andrews and his mom took him to the course at 12 years old and he’d spend his entire days there. Dietz had another GIR and not only was the PWPI scoring record in his sight, so was his personal all-time low round. Kovatch hit pretty much the exact same shot as Dietz and also had a birdie look. Some of you were trying to call the Pasatiempo Pro Shop to bring me out a coffee. It didn’t happen but it’s the thought that counts. Boyza walked up the fairway and told me, ā€œI’m coming back.ā€ It was like Rocky saying he’s not going to get knocked down any more. And on Pasatiempo’s signature hole he was going to come back even more than maybe he realized. Dietzen reminded the livestream viewers his vote was for par (not birdie) to win a Callaway driver but as fate would have it he’d have another chance to win someone that driver very soon. Brian and Mike with a couple of pars here and @JeffSnoop1908 you were on Team Dietzen and the PGAPappas logo Chrome balls are yours.

The livestream started doing all kinds of crazy things on this hole. Nick, Dietzen, and Kovatch found fairway. Boyza left driver in the bag and found the barranca left. I was going to take cart for a hole but you know, AGNB… I wanted to make sure the viewers all saw Pasatiempo like they were here with the gents all walking it. I got the livestream figured out again by Hole No. 14 (with complete hole coverage in HD video) but No. 13 would be a casualty. Kovatch made birdie (his third of the day), Nick and Dietzen made par (Dietz was about to go on a legendary PWPIPasatiempo run). And Boyza was leaking oil. But he’d make up for it in a big way before it was all over. And @cbackhaus3 you were on Team Kovatch so PGAPappas logo Chrome balls incoming!

The toughest hole at Pasatiempo and Nick, Kovatch, and Dietzen hit drives middle fairway all within 5 yards of each-other. Boyza however decided he wanted an extra challenge (nothing but crickets). Nick and Kovatch gave themselves birdie looks, Dietzen almost jarred a bunker shot for birdie. And after some LogoUP magic into the green Boyza might have had the best putt of them all - the old ā€œLong Distance Walk It In for Double.ā€ Nick and Dietzen stopped for a few moments walking up the fairway to take in the view. We got a great pic of the PWPIPasatiempo group on this 11th green. And Nick made the first par on this hole in the group to win @jeff17black a new Odyssey putter.
