Five years ago, one of the world’s most influential people in ballet invited me to his office to talk about the Nutcracker. Those 40 minutes ended up radically changing my life and the entire dance industry forever 🧵 1/
I joined @Twitter 9 years ago because this cute guy I went on a couple dates with was active on the site and I didn’t want to miss out. Now he’s my husband.
So nice to connect with so many of you, often IRL, after meeting here. Hope you’ll continue to follow me and my work!
This is a wonderful, complexifying essay about the appeal of Orientalism, where we would lay blame for appropriation, whose efforts had integrity, and how St. Denis's approach changed according to audience's wishes.
I worked with the brilliant Caroline Hamilton to put together and exhibition at @JacobsPillow that will be up all summer, but if you can’t make in person, I hope you’ll check out the digital exhibit danceinteractive.jacobspillo…

The Trump audio:
"See as president I could have declassified it. Now I can't, you know, but this is still a secret."
"Now we have a problem," a staffer responds.
Because David Byrne really, really loves the '80s, because choreographer Annie-B Parson is genius, because its off-B'way run was spectacular, may "Here Lies Love" reap all the luck in the world vulture.com/article/here-lie…
I wonder why I’m being slammed before I’ve even set a single step, yet the White choreographers who have continued to revive the canon “as is” — racial caricature and all — escape unscathed?

41 years ago, #VincentChin was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat by two White autoworkers in Detroit.
His killing became representative of the violence, racism, and discrimination that #AsianAmericans have long endured in the US.

"If you were good friends, what were you doing ruling on his case?" said Charles Geyh, an Indiana University law professor and leading expert on recusals, told ProPublica. "And if you weren't good friends, what were you doing accepting this?"
