#HouMinghao x “Simon” Reaction Video Pt. 1
-
SZ: “Today we can finally sit down quietly with everyone and listen to this “Simon” performance from the Luzhou Music Festival. I haven’t heard it yet, but the comments section unanimously says the emotional intensity of this song is extremely high, especially the handling of the high notes. Actually, before this, we already listened to his stage for ‘Wrong Love,’ so we already know that Hou Minghao is a young artist with very stable and solid vocal skills. But today, let’s see compared to his previous ‘Wrong Love,’ what’s even more impressive this time, alright? Let’s go check it out.”
(They comment about how this song is very hard to sing, that they usually listen to Zhou Feige and Harlem Yu’s versions, and that Hou Minghao is very handsome. They agree he sounds like veteran singer Li Jian and are impressed by his tone in the main verse. His pronunciation of the word “zhang” was noted as especially spirited and vivid.)
SZ: “Wow, the tone and phrasing in the verse are really moving.”
77: “He hooks you in immediately.”
SZ: “Especially the level of coordination between his facial expressions and his singing style, it feels extremely sincere.”
HF: “I’m kind of looking forward to how he’s going to explode later.”

SZ: “Very restrained. He’s probably saving it for the later explosion.”
*after hearing the first high note*
SZ: “Wow, that stability and cleanliness. Compared to the last time I watched him, this time he’s obviously matured. The emotional control is much more restrained and the storytelling and emotional impact the stage gives off are way stronger. There’s more later, right?”
(He mentions that he likes the next high note and that the last one was very clean.)
77: “Really clean.”
SZ: “High quality, high quality…So compared to the ‘Wrong Love’ we listened to last time, the biggest surprise this time is his growth. First, is his handling of the song. His low and heavy tones have this storytelling feeling. The relationship between his expressions and the way he handles his tone color is very tightly connected, so the story behind this song becomes extremely infectious. You can actually understand the story, rather than just worrying about technical stuff or only focusing on how he’s going to sing the high notes. He’s completely depicting a story and I think that’s growth.
The second thing is the presentation of his high notes. In the past when we heard Simon, we’d think, ‘Wow, this song is intense, the high notes are crazy.’ But with Hou Minghao’s interpretation, I didn’t feel even a little bit like I was waiting for the high notes. Instead, I paid attention to the way he portrayed the entire song. Then when the high notes finally came, they just felt like highlights. But the way he handled them was extremely smooth and effortless. So I also think this is an area where he’s improved tremendously.
The third thing is the overall philosophy behind how he approached the song. He didn’t handle the song in an overly emotional or agitated way. Instead, he used a very calm state to express extremely surging emotions. I think that’s also a very high-scoring point. I don’t know what everyone else thinks, but personally I think the emotional density of this performance is incredibly high, and the storytelling feeling really allows you to get pulled into the story.”
