In this paper, we extend the ecological scaffolding model of evolutionary transitions in individuality by proposing a mechanism of endogenization that brings us a step closer to understanding the emergence of genuine collective-level individuals

Our latest preprint doi.org/10.32942/X2V61T explains why fitness can be defined in so many ways, and which version(s) you should use for what. See threads in other places for explainers @geeklhem @pierrickbourrat

The term 'multicellularity' constantly brings up confusion among scientists. The core problem here is that it's an adjective dressed up as a verb: it expands to 'multicellular group', 'multicellular individual', or 'multicellular organism'. These are not always the same.
Replying to @Archaeon_Alex
How is multicellularity an imprecise concept? Like, slime molds?

Second, all the measures they propose are correlational. I propose instead a causal one.

Finally, I show how their framework can be deployed in the context of evolutionary transition in individuality to assess when a transition has occurred.

Are you an internalist or an externalist when it comes to explanations? In our new work, we explore this distinction in the context of evolutionary transitions in individuality (ETIs). Check it out here: [osf.io/9h26t/].

Internalist and externalist explanations should not be seen as opposing, but rather as complementary. Each provides a unique perspective on the world and is better suited to answer certain questions.

We provide an example based on our recent work on scaffolding endogenization ([biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…]), showing how shifting from an internalist to an externalist perspective changes the focus from altruism to collective-level stability in different environments.
