The windmill, or fān shēn 翻身, is a distinctive family of movements in classical Chinese dance that feels more like flight than turning. Unlike standard spins that rotate on a horizontal plane, fan shen happens on a vertical axis, with the dancer’s torso angled and arms extended, carving smooth arcs through the air.
When performed with control and speed, it transforms into the illusion of a high-speed windmill.
