If someone is telling me to just “offer it up” instead of helping to alleviate my suffering, maybe they're uncomfortable or unable to accompany me in my suffering. In doing so, they unfortunately twist their discomfort into an imposition. catholicthirdspace.com/p/god…

I’m resharing an episode with Esther Harber, an advocate and survivor of clerical sexual abuse. She shares her story and how her abuse has impacted her faith. Esther has maybe the biggest heart of anyone I’ve met. This is one of my favorite interviews. catholicthirdspace.com/p/40-…

I made a new self-paced course about spiritual abuse in the Catholic Church. It includes presentations, slides, additional resources, and access to a private online community to connect with others who have attended the course or workshop. catholicthirdspace.com/p/new…

I spoke with David Lantigua about the Latin American roots of Pope Leo’s theology, specifically in Dilexi Te. And how Leo's Latin American rereading of Vatican II cuts through the progressive vs. traditionalist paradigm present in the western Church catholicthirdspace.com/p/39-…

As we approach the anniversary of Pope Leo’s election, I spoke with Sr. Carino Hodder. We talked about how his Augustinian background shapes his governing style and some of the ways Leo has addressed abuse in the Church. catholicthirdspace.com/p/38-…

If Christ calls me to have a preferential option for the poor, then my default position must be to have a preferential option for not-war, because it’s always the poor who suffer the most in war

Sometime when I read the titles/descriptions of Paul's podcasts, I think, "Yikes, this one is going to be too heady for me." But without fail--without fail--Paul will make sure that things get talked about in layman's terms, and I always come away with such a richer understanding of the topic. Highly recommend this conversation and, well, all of his podcasts.
I spoke with @ShaunLBlanchard about Newman’s thoughts on conscience, the sensus fidei, and synodality, leading to a question about how a Catholic can navigate a conviction of their conscience that is out of line with the Church's current teaching. catholicthirdspace.com/p/37-…

Fr. Matthew is incorrect here about the Church’s teaching. The Church does not currently teach that celibacy is superior or higher than marriage. 1/2
The Catholic Church has consistently taught & still teaches that the state of consecrated chastity is a bigger higher state than the married state. This seems like the best reading of this passage: it is talking of a superior option & encouraging those who were called to take this vocation. Pius XII: "This doctrine of the excellence of virginity & of celibacy & of their superiority over the married state was, as We have already said, revealed by our Divine Redeemer & by the Apostle of the Gentiles; so too, it was solemnly defined as a dogma of divine faith by the holy council of Trent, & explained in the same way by all the holy Fathers & Doctors of the Church." vatican.va/content/pius-xii/…

JD Vance, the Catholic vice president, is now incorrectly explaining Catholic teaching—including saying that Pope Leo’s teaching on war is just his opinion— in order to support the US’s unjust war in Iran. 1/8

They could repent of their partisanship, and they could do it today. They could name JD Vance and Marco Rubio the way they named Biden and Pelosi, and they could do that today. 7/8

Today they could step into credibility. But instead, we're stuck with being happy over scraps. And I am happy over scraps. But I also know what a real meal could be. And there’s real grief there. 8/8

Just a friendly PSA from your Catholic Vice President that war isn't a matter of morality
Apr 13
Vance: I certainly think that in some cases it would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality, to stick to matters of what going on in the Catholic Church and let the President to dictating American public policy

The most advanced military and intelligence apparatus the world has ever seen still managed to accidentally blow up a school full of kids. Given that fact alone, short of an entirely new paradigm in modern warfare, I think we can say that a just war is not possible.
