From @TheAthleticFC: Cape Verde’s Vozinha says U.S. visa issues stopped his mother from witnessing his World Cup heroics in person. The 40-year-old goalkeeper was visibly emotional on the pitch after the game. nyti.ms/4eoQxgZ

40-year-old MOTM Cape Verde GK Vozinha in the mixed zone. “I cried because I grew up with my grandparents and they could not be there. They passed away. My mum could not be here either for a Visa issue, and the money we had to pay for it. We did not manage to do this in time”

Well, that is some result. Spain unable to break Cape Verde down, 0-0. CV fans in the stadium going wild. They've celebrated Vozinha's fans as goals. Their bench jumping into the pitch celebrating the point. Spain with plenty of stuff to figure out after this.

Gavi is De la Fuente’s surprise call for the debut! Intrigued to see where he plays. Expect him as a sort of false left-winger.

At Euro 2024 he was a 16-year-old schoolboy studying for exams while lighting up Spain’s road to victory. Now there is a new Lamine Yamal — one who inhabits an altogether different plane of superstardom. His world is one of Chanel suits and celebrities, but that’s not all. There’s focus, flourishing maturity and his incredible football — ready to follow Pele, Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi on the biggest stage of all. 📝 @polballus 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/7354485…

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente said Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams are available but unable to play a full 90 minutes during their opening World Cup match against Cape Verde on Monday. Yamal, 18, and Williams, 23, missed the end of their respective domestic seasons after both suffering hamstring injuries. The expectation was that Yamal would miss the group-stage opener and would face a race to be fit for their second match against Saudi Arabia. More from @LeonImber and @polballus ⬇️ 🔗 nyti.ms/4xLTykv

Had a few days off before heading to the big thing: I’ll be spending the next three weeks in Atlanta to cover the World Cup.

Barcelona are interested in a move for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon but are unwilling to pay the Premier League’s asking price for the winger. A move for the England international would fill the position held this season by on-loan forward Marcus Rashford. More from @polballus nytimes.com/athletic/6431483…

Spain’s World Cup squad. Lamine Yamal leads the pack. Eric Garcia and Marc Pubill deservedly included, taking the places of Le Normand and Huijsen. Gavi gets the call too. Victor Muñoz will be the X factor from the bench. No Madrid player in the squad, first time in a WC.
