Coastal island communities are especially vulnerable to climate change. Stronger storms, rising seas, biodiversity loss, prolonged droughts, & major floods threaten their existence. Marou Village in the Yasawa archipelago of Fiji is one such community.

Two winning teams will each be provided with a stipend of $100,000 USD to advance their design proposal and build a functioning prototype of their idea in Fiji. Based on the success of these prototypes one project will be implemented at full-scale as a pilot project with Marou.

This is cool. Just by twisting these carbon nanotube ropes you can store record-breaking amounts of energy. Imagine a future where giant spinning disks store solar energy during the day then spin through the evening and night, releasing it to the grid.

California is making it very hard for utilities everywhere to disregard renewable energy due to variability. Utility scale battery energy storage has fully matured and new additions are set to skyrocket. The days of gas-fired power plants are numbered.
Two things happened on the @California_ISO grid last night.
1) Battery storage discharge went over 6GW for the
first time
AND
2) Batteries were the largest source of supply.

What's the better investment?
Solar vs. Direct Air Capture (DAC) carbon offsets.
DAC will be useful in the future but as long as we have a power grid that uses fossil fuels, an investment in a solar panel is the clear winner of this match up.
