I don’t get the “commercial use” angle everyone seems to be making here. By that logic, every Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Zeppo, etc. rider is also carrying out commercial operations using their personal two-wheelers. How is that OK but not bike taxis?
Maharashtra Govt banned bike taxis for the first time in 2023. There was even a high court order to that effect.
But they continued
They were banned for the second time in July 2025. This time a minister even posted videos on social media banning them
But they continued. One company even sponsored an event conducted by the same minister's son
Then they were banned for the third time in Dec 2025. An RTO inspector filed an FIR, seized some bikes and everything.
They still continued
In Mar 2026, The govt definitively banned bike taxis. They put out a govt notice, officially revoked their licences, which for some reason were still active despite all previous bans.
Yesterday while waiting for an Uber, I saw 5 bikes make pickups in front of me. There was even a case where a couple, who were going somewhere, booked two bike taxis and went together
I guess at this point in time, this bike taxi "ban" is like Article 51A of the Indian Constitution, which urged people to protect public property
It exists on paper, but everyone ignores it
