Opal Lee has been described as the grandmother of Juneteenth. She campaigned to make Juneteenth a federal holiday by leading annual 2.5 mile walks & she walked from Fort Worth to Washington DC from September 2016 to Jan 2017 as part of her campaign. womanistgate.org/general-cle…

Victoria Montou “Tante Toya” (c. 1739 - 1805) was a freedom fighter during the Haitian Revolution, during which she fought and commanded other soldiers. She was given the title of Duchess after the revolution, as she helped raise Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the 1st Emperor of Haiti.

Rose Ziba Chibambo (1928 - 2016) was a freedom fighter who organized women in the fight for independence in the British protectorate of Nyasaland (now Malawi). She created the Nyasaland African Women's League to increase women’s awareness & participation in anti-colonial activism

In 1959, Chibambo was imprisoned, along with her infant daughter, two days after giving birth because of her activism against the colonial government and was not released until 1961. After Malawi became independent in 1964, she was the first woman to serve in a cabinet position.

Unity Dow (born 1959) is a lawyer, politician, and human rights activist in Botswana. She is the first woman to serve as a judge on the High Court of Botswana. Previously, she opened the first all woman law firm in Botswana. (1/3)

Unity Dow challenged gender discrimination in a case that overturned Botswana’s law that only allowed fathers to pass on their nationality to their children. After this case, Botswana changed other gender discriminatory laws and other countries changed their nationality laws. 2/3

Sojourner Truth (c. 1797 - 1883) was an abolitionist and activist for Black civil rights and women’s rights. She was born into slavery in NY but escaped with her infant daughter. She successfully sued for her son’s freedom after he was illegally sold to the South.

Sojourner Truth became involved in the women’s rights movement and lectured nationally. Truth became well known for her speech, “Ain’t I a Woman” in which she challenged both gender and racial inequality by drawing on her experience and strength.

Solange “Sonia” Pierre (1963-2011) was a human rights advocate who fought against discrimination against people of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic. Pierre was the founder and director of the organization, Movimiento de Mujeres Dominico-Haitiana (MUDHA).
