I just made an hour-long video on how frustrating it's been to see academics excluded from Israel-Palestine discourse and here we are, a few days later, with ALL my academic mutuals saying this letter on recognition and Montevideo is an embarrasing joke and no media asking them🧵

The EU Pact on Migration and Asylum is due to be implemented next year. The Pact aims to improve rules on responsibility for asylum applications, through the international solidarity mechanism. NGOs are concerned that States are implementing measures that deter migration flows in bad faith. Join this @iiea webinar next week for a discussion with Professor Dr. jur. Cecilia M. Bailliet who will draw on the @UN Draft Declaration on International Solidarity to explain the elements of this international solidarity asylum mechanism that aims to prevent inequalities and discrimination, provides access to justice and keeps the best interests of the child at its core. The webinar and discussion will be chaired by @ProfCCostello Full Professor of Global Refugee and Migration Law at the @UCDLawSchool . 🗓️ Tuesday, 10 June 2025 ⏱️ 1.00p.m. 🔗 Register to attend online: iiea.com/events/constructing… #IIEAevents #JusticeAndHomeAffairs #HumanRights #Migration

Thanks @sallyhayd It's open access for anyone interested, thanks to @ERC_Research @RefMig cambridge.org/core/books/iom…
Thanks to @ProfCCostello for this. It seems like very important & necessary scrutiny of an org that played a big role in what I document in ‘My Fourth Time, We Drowned’ & has in many other places I’ve reported in too. I’m looking forward (if that’s the right term?) to reading it.

🚨 [AI RESEARCH] As the global AI landscape undergoes PROFOUND changes, @anubradford's paper "The False Choice Between Digital Regulation and Innovation" is a MUST-READ [bookmark & download it below]: "Of course, not all digital regulation is beneficial, but neither is all innovation. While many techno-optimists herald the revolutionary nature of digital technologies, others question whether today’s leading tech companies are producing truly welfare-enhancing innovations that are leading to meaningful technological progress and economic growth or enhancing the human experience. A growing number of technologists, investors, journalists, and politicians are criticizing tech companies’ business models that rely on the exploitation of internet users’ data, asking whether those digital services ought to be considered “innovations” that are worth shielding from regulation. In reassessing tech regulation, the EU should therefore think more carefully about innovation, including what kind of innovation its tech regulation ought to advance. This includes the EU asking whether it even wants to nurture a 'European Google' if doing so embraces a business model that is based on extracting user data in ways that contradict the EU’s steadfast commitment to protect European citizens from such exploitation." ➡️ Bookmark & download the paper below. 🎙️ A reminder that tomorrow at 5pm UK time, Anu Bradford and I will have a live conversation covering the topic "The Global AI Race: Regulation & Power" - hundreds have confirmed attendance, don't miss it! 🚨 Studies are starting to show what many of us feared: AI use might lead to overreliance and human disempowerment. Below is the SHOCKING conclusion of this particular study [download for future reference]: "1. We surveyed 319 knowledge workers who use GenAI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot) at work at least once per week, to model how they enact critical thinking when using GenAI tools, and how GenAI affects their perceived effort of thinking critically. Analysing 936 real-world GenAI tool use examples our participants shared, we find that knowledge workers engage in critical thinking primarily to ensure the quality of their work, e.g. by verifying outputs against external sources. 2. Moreover, while GenAI can improve worker efficiency, it can inhibit critical engagement with work and can potentially lead to long-term overreliance on the tool and diminished skill for independent problem-solving. 3. Higher confidence in GenAI’s ability to perform a task is related to less critical thinking effort. 4. When using GenAI tools, the effort invested in critical thinking shifts from information gathering to information verification; from problem-solving to AI response integration; and from task execution to task stewardship. 5. Knowledge workers face new challenges in critical thinking as they incorporate GenAI into their knowledge workflows. 6. To that end, our work suggests that GenAI tools need to be designed to support knowledge workers’ critical thinking by addressing their awareness, motivation, and ability barriers." - ➡️ Comments: - It would be interesting to see more studies like this, especially with larger samples and focusing on different occupations, demographics, and use patterns; - The paper focuses on Generative AI; it will be interesting to see a similar study focused on advanced AI agents, especially as their popularity grows. 👉 Download & read the full paper "The Impact of Generative AI on Critical Thinking: Self-Reported Reductions in Cognitive Effort and Confidence Effects From a Survey of Knowledge Workers" by @hankhplee @AdvaitSarkar, Lev Tankelevitch, @iandrosos, @seanrintel, Richard Banks & Nicholas Wilson below. 👉 NEVER MISS my AI governance updates, including must-read research papers like this one: join 51,800 people who subscribe to my weekly newsletter (below).
