Interview with me in today’s @thetimes about the need for schools and parents to work together on student behaviour. Headline’s a bit chaotic, but the discussion was great. thetimes.com/article/167cd32…

It is so important to get your vote in before the ballot closes, and to vote Yes-Yes to ensure a positive outcome for all teachers! Last minute christmas cards to post? Post your ballot as well!

Current employer and trade union guidance for reducing teacher workload has not been effective – contractual changes are needed to guarantee workload reduction. Vote YES for the manifesto-promised contractual change, to less teaching time and more preparation time.

Scottish Government & COSLA commitments on workload have failed, including a specific clause in the 2018 pay settlement aimed at tackling excessive teacher workload – workload has since spiralled even further out of control. Vote YES for an SNCT agreement focused specifically on workload reduction.

ASN-related work is a big part of the unsustainable workload problem – with at least 40% of young people having an identified support need and a 20% reduction in ASN teacher numbers since 2010, there are simply not enough staff or sufficient time to respond to the level and complexity of ASN need. Vote YES YES for more staffing for ASN eis.org.uk/

We are losing teachers from the profession and we are likely to lose more teachers because of excessive, unsustainable workload. We need more teachers, not fewer, in our schools. Vote YES to keep experienced teachers in and attract new ones to the profession eis.org.uk/

The EIS has noted today’s flurry of education statistic releases from the Scottish Government, and highlighted that the figures confirm the Scottish Government’s failure to meet its commitments on the employment of additional teachers as a means to tackle excessive teacher workload. eis.org.uk/latest-news/edsta…

Your vote matters. Only one thing will persuade the Scottish Government to deliver the manifesto that it was elected on – we, the teachers and our collective resolve to press for promises to be honoured.

Following years of little tangible progress on the Scottish Government's commitment to reduce teachers' weekly class contact time to 21 hours, the EIS will open a statutory ballot on 12th November. The EIS is clear that reducing weekly class contact time to 21 hours, and ensuring that the full 1.5 hours to increase weekly preparation and correction time, would mark an essential step forward in addressing unsustainable levels of teacher workload.

Let’s be clear – teachers don’t want to be on strike; they would rather be in their classrooms providing high quality learning for Scotland’s young people! It is time both the Scottish Government and COSLA deliver on this commitment and reduce teacher’s workload.
