It's #WomensHistoryMonth! Day 1 of influential Native women: Wailacki (Round Valley Indian Tribes) Nicole Aunapu Mann, the first Native woman in space. Mann is a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps & part of the SpaceX Crew-5 mission that went to the ISS in October 2022.
It's #WomensHistoryMonth! Day 2 of influential Native women: Mi’kmaw runner Patti Catalano (1953-), who set US marathon record for women in the 1980 New York City Marathon. Later set 8 American records (5 miles, 10K, 15K, 10 miles, 20K, half, 30K, full) held some world records.
It's #WomensHistoryMonth! Day 3 of influential Native women: Ola Mildred Rexroat (1917-2017), the only Native woman to serve as one of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in WWII. Joined the Air Force after the WASP was disbanded in 1944; worked as an air traffic controller.
Whirlwind trip to Philly for #AHA23, but grateful to @lmansley for curating this amazing panel on writing history for kids, to @UNC_Press for lugging my book to the conference, and for randomly finding historian friends wherever I go.
It’s the first day of Native American Heritage Month, and my newest book is here! I’m thrilled to be part of this @Scholastic series — and, as always, grateful for the opportunity to write about incredible Indigenous women!
It’s #IndigenousPeoplesDay, and we sent our kids to school with copies of the book I wrote last year. It’s a good day to be Indigenous, and it’s an even better day to learn about Indigenous history. Indigenous Peoples' Day (Traditions & Celebrations) a.co/d/iFOJkyM
My lifelong love for theatre runs about as deep as my love for history, so to have my book win an award from @theatrelibassn for an exemplary work in the field of live theater or performance feels pretty spectacular. Miigwech, as always, to @UNC_Press and @MarkSV!
Some days I sit in front of my computer all day. Other days I get to spend time on Lake Superior with @_reets_tweets (and other awesome folks) for an upcoming project with @mnhs — and those days are the best days! Chi miigwech!
You know you're an academic parent when you take your kids mini golfing and bribe them with ice cream so they'll be quiet while you hop on an interview with @dwnews about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' belated apology to #SacheenLittlefeather.
Congress passed the Code of Indian Offenses in 1883, outlawing all Native dances & ceremonies (with severe punishments for violations). It would take until this day in 1978 -- 44 years ago -- for Congress to pass the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. BUT -- 1/2
it's also important to remember that Congress didn't do this out of the goodness of their hearts. AIRFA exists because of the tireless activism and advocacy of Native people across the country -- activism and advocacy that is still ongoing in every facet of our lives. 2/2
I knew we’d moved to the country, but it didn’t really sink in until a neighbor offered cucumbers, zucchini, and eggs to the neighborhood and I picked up a zucchini when I dropped off an old watermelon as a treat for her chickens.
As a stereotypical @Target-loving Millennial, the fact that a book I wrote is now available for pre-order is blowing my mind. target.com/p/indigenous-peop…
Jim Thorpe — one of the greatest athletes in history — has been reinstated as the sole winner in the 1912 Olympic pentathlon and decathlon. It probably doesn’t seem like a big deal to most folks, but Indian Country has been fighting for this for decades. indiancountrytoday.com/news/…
So my undergraduate research assistant, who's currently looking at archival materials from the 1980s-1990s, recently said something to the effect of "You know, I was born in 2002 -- all of this is so new to me!"
And then I crumbled into dust.
"I love you" is the last thing I say to my kids before we get to school. If they don't say it back right away, I repeat it until they do. They think I'm just being funny, but I do it because, if something happens to them at school, it's the last thing we hear each other say.
My parents got me the Red Cliff flag when I started @Macalester, and today I taught my last classes as an assistant professor. In my Native American Activism class — my official last class — one of my students said she knew my ancestors were proud of me. Here’s to sabbatical!
