Experts have warned that the LA fires may have unleashed potentially toxic ash around homes, posing a serious health risk to residents.
The toxic ash is a result of the blazes triggering chemical reactions in paint, furniture, cars, and electronics. Even safe chemicals found in household materials, like titanium dioxide in paint or copper in pipes, can form compounds that are more reactive after a fire, said Mohammed Baalousha, a professor of environmental health sciences at the University of South Carolina.
Victims of the LA fire who are attempting to revisit their homes and sift through the fire damage will need to use protective gear to avoid health complications. According to experts, the ash may contain harmful substances such as lead, asbestos, or arsenic.
In other wildfire-affected regions, such as Maui, residents were prohibited from returning to contaminated sites for approximately two months due to health concerns.According to Los Angeles County officials, residents will not be allowed to return to many locations for at least a week. Officials are emphasizing the importance of safety operations in the affected areas.
